    • A methoo-ana apparatus for batch continuous laundry processing involves a system for continuously centrifugally extracting fluids from sequentially received batches of washed laundry. The discrete batches (28) of laundry are continuously received by a conveying apparatus (24) that automatically loads the batches into the discrete compartments defined within the segmented drum of the extractor. While the extractor is rotating, the conveying apparatus arranges a plurality of laundry batches to be quickly loaded into the extractor upon completion of the processing of the previous batches so that the conveying and processing is completely continuous and automatic. The conveying apparatus (24) is vertically, laterally and longitudinally translatable to receive the batches from a washer at one level, to arrange the batches in two rows, and then to automatically feed them, for example two at a time, into the compartments of the segmented extractor. After completion of the extraction cycle, batches of laundry are positively and automatically unloaded from each compartment of the extractor in a continuous fashion and in coordination with the loading of the extractor. In one embodiment of the present invention the batches are centrifugally expelled from the drum upon completion of the extraction cycle. In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention each compartment is unloaded using a translating vacuum suction device. The unloading of the extractor is facilitated by a segmented, reciprocating carrier movable into and out of the laundry drum.

    • A washing and extracting machine includes a programmable controller for controlling a variable speed drive to control and vary the speed and direction of a rotating laundry cylinder containing a load of materials to be laundered. The cylinder is first loaded and then driven to rotate in a predetermined manner during a washing phase, followed by a rinsing phase and is then accelerated to a relatively high speed for extracting liquid from the laundered materials in an extracting phase. The laundry cylinder is accelerated and/or decelerated in accordance with a changeable, predefined acceleration/deceleration profile so that the laundry materials are movable radially and circumferentially in the cylinder in a controlled manner substantially eliminating unbalanced loading of the cylinder and contents during the washing, rinsing and extracting phases, thus eliminating the need for costly and complex shock mounting systems for supporting the rotating cylinder.

    • A rotary washer/extractor for use with textiles and other materials includes a dynamically controlled suspension system for supporting the washer/extractor from a stationary frame to minimize forces exerted onto the frame and transmitted to the floor or other structure supporting the washer/extractor. The suspension system includes a plurality of supports extending between the frame and the washer/extractor at spaced apart locations in relation to the spin axis. At least one of the supports is a variable length member which may be continually adjusted to vary the distance between the frame and the washer/extractor and thereby minimize the forces caused by eccentric masses of textiles and washing fluids contained in the washer/extractor. A force sensor is provided for measuring the force acting between the washer/extractor and the frame. A processor is provided for receiving the measured force and generating an output response for varying the length of the support to minimize the value of the force and its vibratory effect on the frame. The suspension system is particularly useful for rotary washer/extractors having a drum rotating about horizontal as well as vertical axes and is especially adapted for reducing and minimizing vibratory forces.
