    • A protective system for protecting elements (for example D) of an electric power system allocates a protection zone to each element. The protection zones are defined by switching points (for example 19', . . . , 24') which isolate the associated element (for example D) from the power system. Each of these switching points is associated with a transmitter/actuator unit (for example 19, . . . , 24). The transmitter/actuator units (for example 19, . . . , 24) produce "open" commands for their associated switching points (for example 19', . . . , 24') if it is determined that a fault has occurred inside the associated protection zone. The "open" commands for the switching points (for example 19', . . . , 24') are formed locally within the vicinity of each of the switching points. This is realized by the transmitter/actuator units (for example 22) which contain two evaluating units (for example 22D, 22L8) which are respectively allocated to different protection zones, and in that all evaluating units allocated to one protection zone (for example 19D, . . . , 24D) communicate with each other via local data links (N) and remote data links (F).

    • Apparatus for steam sealing a shaft of a steam turbine is disclosed. The apparatus preferably includes at least four sealing rings which encircle the shaft of the steam turbine. The sealing rings are spaced apart to define at least three regions. A first region, closest to the blades of the turbine, receives contaminated steam and exhibits a below-atmospheric pressure. A third region, furthest from the blades of the turbine, also exhibits a pressure which is less than atmospheric pressure, but which pressure is also less than the pressure in the first region. A second region, arranged between said first and third regions, receives uncontaminated steam and exhibits a pressure which is greater than atmospheric pressure.

    • An electrical machine with an axial-flow fan and a two-part ventilator encasing is disclosed. One part of the ventilator encasing is non-moveable with respect to the fan blade of the axial-flow fan. The second encasing part is moveable with respect to the fan blade, and can be moved from a first position in which the moveable encasing part is adjacent to the fan blade to a second position axially displaced from the first position. The axial movement of the moveable encasing part facilitates maintenance and disassembly work on the machine which require a significant clearance between the fan blade and the encasing. The moveable encasing part is moveably mounted on a bearing bracket associated with the shaft of the rotor of the machine. The shaft of the rotor is used to coaxially position the moveable encasing part with respect to the axial-flow fan and the axial-flow fan blade. Means are provided to lock the moveable encasing part in the first axial position, and to maintain the quality of a seal between the moveable and non-moveable encasing parts during machine operation.

    • A density monitoring gauge is disclosed which modifies a Bourdon tube manometer by introducing a compensating element between the end of the Bourdon tube and the pointer actuating mechanism. The compensating element is designed to accommodate for changes in circumferential length of the Bourdon tube induced by temperature as well as to compensate for pressure changes in a closed system attributed directly to changes in gas temperature within that closed system. The compensating means may consist of a bimetallic member having an .OMEGA. configuration. Alternatively, the compensating means may include a pair of synthetic material rods connected by a thermally stable member such that linear thermal expansion of the rods is additively connected between the tube spring and the pointer actuating mechanism. The density measuring device is desirably used in connection with sulfur hexafluoride insulated electrical switching gear. If desired, the density monitor may be arranged with an electrical alarm to indicate the presence of a leak.

    • A reactor switch has a switching point which is arranged between a high-voltage reactor and a high-voltage line. When this switch is being switched off, the occurrence of arc-back oscillations with excessively high rate voltage changes is avoided in a simple and reliable manner. This is achieved in that the switching point is connected in parallel with a voltage-dependent resistor. This resistor, which preferably contains a metal oxide such as zinc oxide, has a current/voltage characteristic which limits the recurring voltage across the switching point in such a manner that the skewing rate of the voltage of a high-frequency arc-back oscillation occurring during an arc-back of the switching point always remains below a predetermined value.
