    • An armature for an electromotive device having a unitary coil and armature is disclosed. The armature may include a coil having inner and outer winding portions separated by an insulator, each of the winding portions comprising a plurality of sheet metal conductors, and a commutator having a plurality of sheet metal commutator segments each being integrally formed with one of the conductors. In one embodiment of the armature, the commutator may have a smaller outside diameter than the outside diameter of the coil. In the same or different embodiment of the armature, the commutator segments may have a width greater than the width of the conductors. The armature may be fabricated from a pair of conductive sheets by forming in each of the conductive sheets a plurality of conductive bands each having first and second conductor portions, shaping the conductive sheets into inner and outer cylinders, positioning the inner cylindrical conductive sheet inside the outer cylindrical conductive sheet, forming a coil from the first conductor portions of the inner and outer cylindrical conductive sheets, and forming a commutator from the second conductor portions of the inner and outer cylindrical conductive sheets.

    • An electrical machine, such as an electric motor, dynamo or alternator has a casing (26) with cooling vents (64) enabling cooling fluid (F) to flow into and out of the casing when the rotor (10) of the electrical machine rotates. The rotor (10) may be formed from conductive elements (44) connected together at their outer regions by inter-connecting members (40) which have vanes (68, 70) arranged to direct cooling fluid over the outer regions. Each conductive element (44) is a metal strip (45) with legs (46, 48) bent in opposite directions (D.sub.1, D.sub.2) relative to the plane of the strip. Portions of the windings (28, 30) of the rotor (10) are spaced apart to allow fluid to flow between the windings to enhance the cooling effect. With a current carrying rotor, the magnetic field intensity across the rotor is varied by varying the axial separation of the rotor and the stator (74, 76).

    • In a small starter motor which has a substantially closed space therein, it is necessary to blow out brush dust particles therefrom. On a coil end surface or both coil end surfaces of an armature, a fan generating an air circulation is formed utilizing gaps formed between individual coil ends on the surface without adding any other parts. Also, a side wall is disposed next to the coil end surface in parallel thereto which closes an axial end of a yoke in which the armature is coaxially disposed. In the space formed between the side wall and the coil end surface, an air circulation is generated when the armature rotates. The side wall has an air inlet hole and the yoke has an air outlet hole. Air coming into the space from the air inlet hole is blown out from the air outlet hole by the circulation generated by the fan made on the coil end surface. The brush dust particles are blown out by the circulated air, and the coil ends are cooled off at the same time. A distance between the side wall and the coil end surface and a depth of the gaps formed between the individual coil ends have to be optimized to obtain a good air circulation.

    • An electric rotating machine which withstands mechanical and thermal loads applied thereto is provided. Coil arms and coil trunks are provided in roughly parallel orientation to the end faces of an armature core only through insulating rings and insulating spacers. Metal brush is disposed on coil arms constituting a commutator, whereby the overall length of the armature can be remarkably shortened. The coil arms are strongly pressed against and fixed to the side of armature core by a collar, so that the resistance to the centrifugal force can be remarkably improved. A cylindrical ring is circumferentially fitted on the upper coil trunks to prevent radially outward movement of the coil arms due to the centrifugal force. The coil arms disposed in a non-commutator side are made radially shorter than those disposed in the commutator side. Thus, electric resistance of an armature coil is reduced and radial movement caused by the centrifugal force is reduced.
