    • A downhole tool apparatus has a housing with a compression chamber defined therein. A fill passage is disposed through the housing for placing the compression chamber in open flow fluid communication with a well annulus exterior of the housing so that well fluid may flow into the compression chamber as the apparatus is lowered into a well. An isolation valve is provided for selectively closing the fill passage and thereby trapping well fluid in the compression chamber. An operating element is disposed in the housing. An actuating piston is slidably disposed in the housing and is operably associated with the operating element for operating the same in response to movement of the actuating piston relative to the housing. The actuating piston and housing are so arranged and constructed that movement of the actuating piston relative to the housing changes the volume of the compression chamber and of any well fluid trapped therein. The volume of the compression chamber is sufficiently large that an equal volume of water containing no absorbed gases would have a volume decrease when subjected to a pressure increase equivalent to a predetermined operating pressure of the actuating piston means, at least as great as the decrease in volume of the compression chamber when the actuating piston is moved between first and second positions thereof relative to the housing.

    • A downhole tool apparatus includes a housing having an operating element disposed therein. An actuating piston is disposed in the housing and is operably associated with the operating element so that the operating element is operated in response to movement of the actuating piston relative to the housing. A packer is disposed about the housing for sealing between the housing and a well bore and for thereby defining an upper end of a sealed well annulus zone external of the housing. A compression passage is disposed through the housing and communicates a low pressure side of the actuating piston with the sealed well annulus zone exterior of the housing. A lower packer is longitudinally spaced from the upper packer defines a lower end of the sealed well annulus zone. The upper and lower packers are set to define the sealed well annulus zone and to define a trapped reference pressure therein equivalent to the hydrostatic pressure of well annulus fluid. The sealed well annulus zone also provides a trapped volume of well fluid which acts as a compressible fluid spring to oppose the movement of the actuating piston. The actuating piston operates in response to increased well annulus pressure above the upper packer.

    • An annulus pressure responsive downhole tool includes a housing having a power piston slidably disposed therein. First and second pressure conducting passages communicate a well annulus with first and second sides of the power piston. A retarding device is disposed in the second pressure conducting passage for delaying communication of a sufficient portion of an increase in well annulus pressure to the second side of the power piston for a sufficient time to allow a pressure differential across the power piston to move the power piston from a first position to a second position relative to the housing. A pressure relief valve is communicated with the second pressure conducting passage between the power piston and the retarding device for relieving from the second pressure conducting passage a volume of fluid sufficient to permit the power piston to travel to its second position. The pressure relief valve is opened by mechanical action when the power piston starts to move toward its second position.

    • A flow tester valve apparatus includes a housing having a flow passage disposed therethrough with a flow valve disposed therein for opening and closing the flow passage. A first chamber is disposed in the housing and filled at least partially with a compressible liquid and a second side of the power piston is in fluid communication with the first chamber. A second chamber is disposed in the housing and includes a floating piston which divides the second chamber into a first zone and a second zone. An equalizing port is disposed in the housing for transmitting pressure from the well annulus to the second zone of the second chamber. Pressurizing and depressurizing passages communicate the first chamber with the first zone of the second chamber. A first back pressure check valve and a first flow restrictor are disposed in the pressurizing passage. A second back pressure check valve and a second flow restrictor are disposed in the second passage.

    • A downhole tool includes inner and outer telescoping cylindrical members. The inner cylindrical member has a cylindrical indexing sleeve disposed thereabout. A groove having a semi-circular cross section is disposed in a cylindrical outer surface of the indexing sleeve. Connected to the outer cylindrical member is an apparatus for holding a spherical ball so that approximately one-half the ball is engaged with the semi-circular cross section groove and the other of the ball is disposed within a radial bore in the outer cylindrical member. Relative movement between the inner and outer cylindrical members is defined by engagement of the spherical ball with the groove. The spherical ball is biased toward the groove by a compression spring or a displaceable fluid under pressure.

    • Disclosed is an apparatus and its method of operation for an oil well valve having a self adjusting liquid spring responsive to changes in pressure in the well annulus. The valve has a liquid spring contained in a spring chamber divided by a piston means which moves responsive to annulus pressure changes to operate the valve. The piston means includes a metering means to meter liquid from one side of the piston to the other as the volume of the liquid changes due to pressure and temperature changes. The piston means moves responsive to pressure changes in the well annulus which pressure changes are applied to the well annulus at a rate faster than the metering means may relieve the changes. A mechanical spring means in conjunction with the metering means returns the piston means to its original position after a predetermined time. Bypass means is additionally disclosed which bypasses the metering means and may be arranged such that piston means movement occurs on either pressure increases or pressure decreases in the well annulus.
