    • A vehicle heater with a burner, a fan for the combustion air to be fed to the burner, a heat exchanger for heating the engines's cooling water, which is circulated in a closed circuit, and with a control device. A basic housing is provided substantially in the form of one of a parallelepiped and a semicylinder with an essentially flat, continuous upper housing surface. The basic housing is axially divided into a first housing end section, which is located at a first end and accommodates the burner and the heat exchanger, a middle housing part containing the fan, as well as a second housing end section comprising the control device. The inlet and outlet connections of the heat exchanger as well as a connecting branch for fuel to be fed to the burner are located within the upper surface of the basic housing. An attachment-type housing with at least one circulating pump for the cooling water to be heated can be attached essentially to the entire upper housing surface of the basic housing to form one of an approximately parallelepipedic or cylindrical overall housing. Also a cover can be attached essentially to the entire upper housing surface of the basic housing if the attachment-type housing is not employed.

    • An improved apparatus for heating fluid by burning liquid fuel is disclosed. To heat fluid such as water, air or the like medium heat exchanging is effected between the combustion chamber in which liquid fuel is burnt with combustion air introduced therein and the fluid passage through which fluid to be heated flows. The apparatus includes means for controlling rotational speed of a single motor for rotating the fuel pump and the blower, means for controlling a flow rate of fuel to be pumped from the fuel pump, means for controlling a flow rate of combustion air and an electronic control unit into which a variety of parameters relative to the above-mentioned means are inputted. The parameters are processed in the electronic control unit to individually control the means for controlling rotational speed of the motor, the means for controlling a flow rate of fuel and the means for controlling a flow rate of combustion whereby heat exchanging therebetween is achieved without fluctuation in temperature of fluid. Typically, the parameters are rotational speed of the motor and flow rate of fuel pumped from the fuel pump. The parameters may be those as selected from a group of atmosphere pressure, temperature of combustion air, voltage of electric current, temperature of fluid before and behind heating and required heating temperature of fluid.

    • A combustion system, particularly for a fuel burning heater that incorporates a glow plug for initiating combustion and a spark plug for maintaining the combustion. An improved switching arrangement is employed for shutting off the glow plug and initiating the spark plug operation at the appropriate period. This system includes a temperature sensing arrangement that senses the temperature in the combustion chamber by means of a remotely positioned radiantly sensitive switching element. This switching element in effect views the temperature in the combustion chamber through a hollow shaft that drives a fan, which fan circulates the combustion products through the chamber. The sensing element may also be employed for continuing the operation of the fan for a predetermined time period after combustion in the combustion chamber ceases.
