    • A mixing device employs a rotating hollow column or pipe that is motor-driven for rotation, is open at both ends to, at its upper or outer end, receive an inflow of a mixing fluid, such a gas or liquid, and its opposite or lower end, to simultaneously receive a co-axial inflow of a fluid-like or flowable charge material that is to be thoroughly and substantially uniformly mixed with the counter in-flowing mixing fluid. A positive in-flow of the flowable material from a container, for example, is effected from the lower end of the device within the column, to combine with the in-flow of the mixing fluid and premix therewith in a swirling movement with respect thereto at an annularly open portion of the column and, as thus premixed, enter one or more annular out-flow chambers defined by spaced-apart disc assemblies which are being rotated to generate centrifugal force to finally complete the mixing of the materials and project them annularly radially outwardly therefrom, as into the container from which the flowable material is being drawn by reason of positive inward or suction pressure generated by a powered rotation of the column and its attached disc assembly or assemblies. Each disc or plate assembly may be shaped to provide a desired type and direction of outflow of the now fully mixed material from the outflow chamber or chambers back into the container from which fluid such as a liquid is being drawn.

    • Apparatus for the treatment of liquids, including waste liquids, by aeration. The apparatus has a propeller, a motor and a leg extending between the motor and propeller. The leg includes a shaft coupled to the motor, the shaft driving the propeller. An outer housing of the leg generally surrounds the shaft. Air is drawn into and through the leg on rotation of the propeller within the liquid and is discharged into the liquid generally adjacent the propeller. In the improvement of the present invention, the shaft is solid while a tubular cantilever is supported at one of its ends within the outer leg housing in surrouding relation to the shaft. The tubular cantilever extends from its supported end away from the motor. Bearings support the shaft via the tubular cantilever at spaced locations along the shaft and cantilever.

The apparatus is comprised of a hollow outer housing (22) and a hollow inner tube (24) received for rotary motion within the outer housing (22). A motor (61) is attached to the outer housing (22) adjacent a first end thereof and is drivingly coupled to a first end of the inner tube (24). The inner tube (24) has a support tube (214) which extends beyond the second end of the outer housing (22). Propeller blades (216) are attached to the support tube (214) for rotation therewith. An inlet (82) is formed in the inner tube (24) for admitting a gas to the hollow interior of the inner tube (24). The support tube (214) has a diffusion section (222) that extends below the propeller blades (216).The propeller mechanism (210), which includes the support tube (214) and the blades (216), is designed to increase the oxygen transfer efficiency of the apparatus (10, 212) over that provided by a standard marine propeller (48). Each propeller blade (216) has an impelling surface (232) with a varying rake which changes to a more positive rake from a leading end (226) to a tail end (228) of each propeller blade (216). Plates (238, 240, 242) are attached to the air outlet end (224) of the support tube (214). Lower portions (250) of the plates (240, 242) are bent backward in the direction in which the propeller mechanism (210) is to be rotated.

    • A liquid moving and mixing apparatus is selectively submersible in a body of liquid and is operative to effect a turbulent flow of the liquid upwardly and then outwardly and then downwardly and to mix a selected material into the body of liquid during the upwardly and outwardly flow of the liquid. The liquid moving and mixing apparatus includes a propeller rotated by a submersible motor carried on a portion of a frame structure extending upwardly from a ballast member. The propeller directs the flow of liquid upwardly toward a downwardly directed apex of a cone-shaped diffusing member which directs the flow upwardly and outwardly toward a deflector member which deflects the flow outwardly and downwardly. Liquid flow by the diffusing member cooperates with and/or induces a flow of a selected material outwardly through an annular orifice in the diffusing member adjacent to and spaced from the apex thereof to mix said material into the body of liquid during the flow effected therein.
