    • An apparatus is disclosed for increasing the internal bond strength of a web. The apparatus includes a headbox (10) which is connected to a source of stock (15), the headbox having an upstream and a downstream end. The headbox includes a tube bank (18) for the flow therethrough of the stock. A slice chamber (30) is disposed downstream relative to the tube bank (18), the slice chamber having an upstream portion for receiving the stock flowing through the tube bank at a downstream slice opening (34) for the ejection therethrough of the stock. A plurality of trailing elements (64) are disposed within the chamber, each element being pivotally secured adjacent to the upstream portion. A twin wire former (11) is disposed downstream relative to the slice opening for receiving the stock from the headbox. The headbox (10) also includes a consistency profiling device (36, 40) for adjusting the consistency profile of the web in a cross-machine direction and for adding materials into a region disposed in the middle of the thickness of the web, such materials enhancing the bonding of the fibers within the stock particularly located within the region.

    • A dryer section in a papermaking machine has two reversing rolls (18, 20) to form a pocket between each pair of dryers (16, 22) in a dryer tier (15). The first reversing roll (18) is a vacuum roll and the second reversing roll (20) is a grooved roll. A blow box (24) is disposed between the two rolls; the blow box provides suction for the grooved roll and provides vacuum which restrains a web on the dryer fabric (12) as it travels between the first and the second rolls. The blow box (24) also provides a supply of make-up air which extends in a cross machine direction along the pocket formed by the two reversing rolls. The blow box also supports a pivoting foil (54) which is positioned against the dryer fabric (12) as it moves from a first dryer (16) towards the first reversing roll (18). The foil (54) defines a region of low pressure which restrains the web as it travels between the first dryer and the first reversing roll.

    • A flow system apparatus has a dual chamber for directing countercurrent flows of coating within the chambers from inlet to exit ends in each chamber. Each chamber has a plurality of longitudinally extending flow openings for permitting the coating flowing within a chamber to exit from the chamber in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal flow within the chamber. The flow openings in both of the chambers are connected to a mixing chamber where their flows are combined to be directed into a coater head for application to a traveling paper web substantially uniformly along an opening extending across the web substantially perpendicular to the direction of web travel. In a preferred embodiment, control of the flow of the aqueous slurry near the edges of the traveling paper web is effected by a plurality of control openings extending between the dual chambers near their inlet and exit ends. The overflow from the exit ends of each of the dual chambers can either be recycled into the system producing the aqueous flow, or it can be redirected into the inlet ends of either of the dual chambers.
