    • A method for enhancing the reliability of a simplified multicasting forwarding protocol in a wireless network is provided. The method comprises establishing a list of multi-point relaying (MPR) nodes for each of a plurality of nodes. The list of MPR nodes includes neighbor nodes that cover each of the plurality of nodes within two hops. A first set of nodes is identified that is not already in the list of MPR nodes. In a first approach, the first set of nodes includes nodes that are the only neighbor node to a node in the list of MPR nodes. In a second alternative approach, the first set of nodes includes nodes that are sequentially previous to a node in the list of MPR nodes. Once the first set of nodes is identified, the first set of nodes is added to the list of MPR nodes. If the first approach is used, the method further comprises identifying a second set of nodes that is not already in the list of MPR nodes. The second set of nodes comprises nodes that have the largest number of neighboring MPR nodes. The second set of nodes is then added to the list of MPR nodes.

    • A method for optimizing a wireless network comprises obtaining local measurement and feedback data from a single node in the network; estimating a state of the node by using the local measurement and feedback data in an analysis framework model of the wireless network; applying the estimated state of the node to a local control law to determine one or more local protocol parameter updates for the node; and transmitting the one or more local protocol parameter updates to the node in the network. The method can further comprise obtaining global measurement and feedback data from one or more additional nodes in the network; estimating a state of the one or more additional nodes by using the global measurement and feedback data in the analysis framework model; applying the estimated state of the one or more additional nodes to the local control law; applying the estimated state of the one or more additional nodes to a global control law to determine one or more network-wide protocol parameter updates; and transmitting the network-wide protocol parameter updates to the network.

    • A wireless communication system comprises one or more control units operable to transmit control signals, a plurality of actuators responsive to the control signals, and a plurality of sensors operable to transmit sensor data used by the one or more control units in generating the control signals. The number of channels in each of the plurality of wireless paths is determined based, at least in part, on a worst-case estimate of potential interference, and each of the plurality of sensors is operable to pseudo-randomly switch the plurality of channels over which the sensor data is transmitted.
