    • A memory efficient image processor (20) receives DPCM prediction error values from decompressed MPEG coded digital video signals in the form of pixel blocks containing luminance and chrominance data in a 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 format and recompresses the pixel bocks to a predetermined resolution. Luminance and chrominance data are processed with different compression laws during recompression. Luminance data are recompressed to an average of six bits per pixel, and only a reference pixel and one other pixel are processed separately from all other luminance pixels in a block. Chrominance data are recompressed to an average of four bits per pixel. Each pixel block is stored with overhead information facilitating efficient and accurate reconstruction. Accurate pixel reconstruction is facilitated by processing a reference pixel accurately (31); scaling the pixel block (28); employing quantization tables (28) which are symmetrical and fitted to the domain of the pixel block; biasing negative prediction error values (27) to positive values; using short codewords in quantization tables (28) at levels which are most likely to occur statistically; and processing each pixel with three, four or five bit quantization (28) to ensure maximum resolution and an overall four-bit average for the pixel block.

    • A television receiver includes telephone network interface circuitry which allows the receiver to receive and process Caller-ID signals for display during the ringing period of the telephone set. The television receiver also includes circuitry which allows a list of priority callers to be entered. The incoming Caller-ID codes are compared to the telephone numbers of the priority callers. Upon detection, the Caller-ID information of a priority caller is displayed on screen during television viewing. The telephone numbers of those callers not listed as priority callers are not displayed during the ringing period of the telephone. Both displayed and non-displayed telephone numbers which correspond to unanswered telephone calls are stored in a Caller-ID list for display at the user's convenience. Thus, the user is able to enter data to select beforehand which calling telephone numbers are permitted to interrupt his or her television show by displaying Caller-ID information on the screen.

    • A user/subscriber set-top unit (42, 44) in a satellite TV system is associated with a modem (30) coupled to an input optical fiber interface network (12) via a relatively high attenuation unshielded twisted pair (UTP) link (24). The modem demodulates (36) a UTP-attenuated, CAP 16 modulated downstream main signal, and generates (38) a higher energy QPSK modulated upstream return signal. Return signal interference in the received main signal is attenuated (34) by subtracting a delayed, phase adjusted version of the modulated return signal from the main signal before the main signal is demodulated. Interference cancellation is accomplished by using a subtraction process rather than by using a frequency selective filtering process. Interference cancellation may also be accomplished (22) in the interface network (12) preceding the UTP link.

    • An MPEG coded and compressed video signal is received and decompressed for display. Prior to storing frames required for motion compensation in memory (14), pixel blocks are recompressed by quantizing (20) DPCM prediction error values (18) to reduce bandwidth and frame memory requirements. Fixed length quantization and dequantization tables (Fig. 2) have N levels (e.g., 15 levels), and each level has an associated output symbol of predominantly M bits (e.g., 4 bits), except that at least one of said N levels (e.g., level 7) is defined by a unique short symbol having less than M bits (e.g., 3 bits). One of the M bits may be reserved as a sign bit. Each time a short symbol is used to represent a data value, bandwidth and memory are reduced and/or preserved for other uses, for example, inserting overhead data into a fixed-size data stream. For large sequences of data, such as exists for video data for example, the reduction in memory and bandwidth is significant.

The system includes a set top box which receives an application program from a broadcast station. The set top box executes the application program. The application program includes Unicode character encoding text for display on a television coupled to the set top box. An operating environment running on the set top box includes a Unicode encoding engine which the application program invokes to display Unicode text. The encoding engine determines the language of characters in the text and invokes a rendering engine corresponding to the language of each character, thus enabling characters from different languages to be mixed in the same text string. The rendering engine has specific knowledge of the language, such as rendering direction and context. One or more glyph sets may be plugged in.

A switching controller IC (U1) is coupled between a primary transformer winding (W1) on the rectified raw B (RAW B ) input voltage and ground. A switching transistor (Q2) is coupled to the control input of the controller and is biased by the raw B input voltage for pulling down the control input (CNTL). A run/standby control circuit (R5, R6, R7, Q3, Q4, Z3, U3) and an overcurrent protective circuit disable the switching transistor during run mode operation and enable the switching transistor upon an overcurrent fault. The switched-mode power supply is further provided with a quick-reset capability (Q7, R11, R12) to enable the power supply to consistently provide output voltages which are within nominal output voltage levels despite rapidly repeated dislocations in the operational mode of the apparatus.
