    • A miniature loudspeaker assembly comprises a loudspeaker drive unit (10) housed in an enclosure (12). The drive unit (10) comprises a magnet unit (24) defining a magnetic air gap (18), a voice coil (16) extending at least partly in the air gap, and a diaphragm (14) coupled to and driven by the voice coil. Magnetic fluid (26) is injected into the air gap to occupy interstices between the voice coil and the poles (20, 22) of the magnet unit. The enclosure (12) has a volume between about one eighth and about double a compliance equivalent volume of the loudspeaker drive unit. Preferably, the enclosure volume is less than or equal to the compliance equivalent volume of the drive unit. The enclosure may have a port (52). The free space resonance frequency of the ported enclosure (12) may be between about 50 per cent and about 60 per cent of the free space resonance frequency of the loudspeaker drive unit.

    • An apparatus for coupling signals to a transmission line, such as a power line (120). The apparatus comprises an input for receiving a wanted signal; a first coupler for coupling the wanted signal (Vmain) onto the line at a first position (Y); a cancelling means (WB, WR, WY), coupled to the input, for deriving a cancelling signal (Vaux) from the wanted signal; a second coupler for coupling the cancelling signal onto the line at a second position (X), spaced from the first position; wherein the wanted signal and the cancelling signal destructively combine in a single direction of propagation along the line while enabling the wanted signal to propagate in the other direction along the line. The apparatus can be used to minimise radiation from an unshielded part of an electricity distribution network, such as substation (100), or to allow re-use of a frequency band on other power lines.

    • An echo cancelling system for communication systems. The system includes an adaptive filter (34) that processes the speech signal re-constructed by a speech decoder (30) to generate an echo estimate. The echo estimate is subtracted from the echo containing signal propagating in the communication link to remove or at least reduce the echo corruption. The tap coefficients of the adaptive filter are established on the basis of an error signal that is representative of difference between the echo estimate and the actual echo and on the basis of a signal element that is a component of the re-constructed speech signal. The signal element is highly decorrelated using a decorrelation filter (38) to enable the adaptive filter to converge faster and manifest an improved echo return loss enhancement.

    • Many types of antenna comprise a ground plane spaced apart from a dielectric film or sheet which supports a microstrip pattern comprising printed patch radiating elements by a dielectric spacer, such as flat plate antennas (otherwise known as layered antennas). For modern telecommunications applications various factors need to be taken into account, such as size, weight, cost and ease of construction of the antenna. At high frequencies, e.g. above 100 MHz, circuit losses increase as the frequencies increase due to, inter alia, dielectric spacing. The present invention provides an antenna dielectric having a thickness of less than 3 mm, having a relative dielectric permitivity approaching that of air whereby circuit and transmission line losses are minimised. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, there is provided an antenna ground plane substrate comprising an expanded polystyrene substrate produced by a two-stage moulding process. Introducing the pre-expanded beads into a two-position mould cavity in a first position dimensioned to enable a uniform distribution of beads; reducing the size of the cavity passing steam through the mould whereby the polystyrene beads further expand; reducing the pressure within the mould to a partial vacuum whereby the polystyrene cools and assumes a solid state and the moisture due to the steam is removed; and removing the substrate from the mould and heating the substrate at a temperature above ambient in dry air. The two-stage polystyrene is coated with a conductive coating to provide a conductive surface of uniform smoothness and of light weight.
