    • A method of paging for a mobile station operating in a radio telecommunications network having a serving mobile switching center (MSC) (13), a home location register (HLR) (12), and a plurality of border MSCs (15, 17). The method comprises the steps of paging for the mobile station in the serving MSC, and sending an intersystem paging message (26, 27) from the serving MSC to each of the plurality of border MSCs. The intersystem paging message includes an instruction to pa ge the mobile station (56), an indication of a number of page attempts to perform (55), and an indication of a page response time for each page attempt (57). A total page response time is calculated in the serving MSC by taking into account the entry time of a Routing Reques t Invoke message, the signaling delay in the border system, the average time for designation of a voice channel, and an additional avera ge time for transferring the call to voice mail in the event of a no page response condition. If a page response (31) is received in one of th e border MSCs (15) prior to expiration of the maximum time period for completion of the page attempts, the method stops internal paging in the serving MSC and may send a release message (37) from the serving MSC to the non-responding border MSCs (17) from which no response was received, to release paging resouces in the non-responding border MSCs. If no page response is received within the maxim um time period allowed, the HLR may initiate transfer of the call to voice mail.

    • A system and methods of global paging of mobile stations in a wireless network. The system includes a MSC pool ( 50 ) for servicing mobile stations within a specified service area of the network and a radio configuration database ( 70 ) defining a plurality of global paging areas ( 80, 82, 84 ) within the specified service area. The radio configuration database ( 70 ) is accessible by any mobile switching center ( 52, 54, 56 ) in the pool ( 50 ) to allow paging of a mobile station ( 28 ) roaming within the specified service area according to one or more global paging areas ( 80, 82, 84 ). The radio configuration database ( 70 ) can be structured in a hierarchy including cells, locations areas, and base station controller/radio network controller ( 20 ) for each global paging area in the specified service area. In this way, any mobile switching center in the pool is capable of paging a mobile station within the specified service area by accessing the radio configuration database and determining the cell identity, location area identity, and base station controller/radio network controller identity of a mobile station roaming within the specified service area.

    • Telecommunication system in which local terminals may be called from one or more central stations by way of transmission paths selected by selection device on the probability of success. Selection takes place with the help of selection tables on the basis of exchanged signalling messages obtained from, or by way of, a switching system (3); other selection tables are also possible, e.g., on the basis of geographic or cartographic information. To the transmission paths there are assigned scores on the basis of the points in time of successful and unsuccessful calls, and of numbers of successful calls. During a session, a call is first made by way of the transmission path having the highest score (S(ok), S(nok) or S(rc)) in one of the selection tables (OK, NOK and RC, respectively). In the event of failure, the call is repeated by way of a preferred transmission path (PP), once again in sequence of the scores from one of the selection tables. If these calls are unsuccessful as well, the other transmission paths are tested, once again in sequence of the scores (S(ok), S(nok) or S(rc)) from one of the selection tables (OK, NOK and RC, respectively). Transmission paths for which it is a short while ago (e.g., less than 5 minutes) that an unsuccessful call took place, are not used. All this is useful, inter alia, for Inmarsat, GSM, UMTS and UPT.
