    • A device for limiting stresses exerted by neighbouring ground on a buried structure which comprises at least two neighbouring elements which form at least one part of the wall of the structure. The stress limiting device comprises at least one longitudinal slidable plate adapted to be connected by one of its edge portions to one of the neighbouring structure elements, at least two longitudinal guide elements adapted to be connected to the other structure element and applied respectively by one of their faces against at least the opposed edge portion of the slidable plate. A plurality of fixing means extend through apertures in the slidable plate and in the guide elements for clamping the opposed edge portion of the slidable plate between said guide elements. At least one of the guide elements constitutes a fishplate. At least the apertures in the opposed edge portion of the slidable plate are disposed in a plurality of spaced-apart longitudinal rows so that the zones located between the apertures of the same row of two adjacent rows form zones of deformation and/or fracture capable of yielding under the fixing means by a sliding of the slidable plate between the guide elements under the effect of forces which may be exerted on the device by the structure elements.

    • 1506581 Yieldable mine roof support stilts GKN SANKEY Ltd 5 Aug 1975 [18 May 1974] 22308/74 Heading E1E A stilt for a mine roof support leg 11, 211 includes an elongate deformable member 13, 213 having at least two limbs 14, 214 and 15, 215 extending in the same direction from a bend 17, 217 therebetween, the limb 15, 215 being adapted to carry the leg 11, 211 and being itself supported by the -limb 14, 214 whereby under load one limb 15, 214 is stressed in tension and increases in length, and the other limb 14, 215 is stressed in compression and decreases in length, with movement of the bend 17, 217 along the deformable member, to control descent of the leg. As shown, there are two of each such limb contained in a tubular body 10, 210, the inner limbs 15, 215 being connected by a bend 16 or welded block 219 to engage the leg.
