    • One or more preferred call numbers are defined and managed for mobile subscribers. A destination number dialed with the call is compared to the preferred call numbers for the mobile subscriber. When the destination call number is identical to a preferred call number, the call charges are determined by a charging device in the mobile network in a different manner than the usual charge. The storing of the preferred call numbers can occur at the mobile station side in a mobile station or at the network side. Based on the subscriber-specific stipulation of preferred call numbers, mobile subscribers have the ability to select and define specific call destinations which are charged differently than other calls, for instance according to a more favorable fee schedule. This increases the flexibility of the mobile subscribers and network operators with respect to the scheduling of calling rates.

    • The present invention relates to systems and methods for providing a “lifeline” service to a VoDSL customer despite an electrical power outage or integrated access device failure at the customer premise. A bypass function is implemented in an integrated access device at the customer premise to provide the lifeline service. The bypass function is preferably a relay, which can be automatically activated to provide the lifeline service under various conditions. The bypass relay, working in conjunction with systems in the central office and the regional switching center allows the customer to obtain an active telephone line during power outages or integrated access device failures. Electrical power is also supplied to the customer's premise from the central office, thereby allowing the customer to use a telephone line in the traditional manner. The present invention can further be implemented for any number of customers and telephone lines.

    • An apparatus and method for preliminary communication identification is disclosed. An apparatus for preliminary communication identification includes a receiver for receiving a signal from a remote source and a communicator for communicating the received signal. The communicator is suitable for communicating the received signal without indicating reception of the received signal to the remote source. The signal may include an image of a second user utilizing the remote source so as to enable a first user utilizing the apparatus to view the remote second user. A method for preliminary communication identification is also disclosed, including receiving a signal by a host system from a remote source and communicating the signal by the host. The signal is suitable for being communicated without indicating reception of the signal by the host to the remote source.

    • A method for providing telephone services for the hearing-impaired includes establishing a conference call between a hearing-impaired party, a hearing party and a communication assistant. The hearing party sends a voice message to the communication assistant. The communication assistant converts the voice message into a corresponding text message and transmits the text message to the hearing-impaired party. The text message is displayed to the hearing-impaired party using a device that includes a modem. The modem outputs a synchronization tone in response to receiving the text message. The synchronization tone and other tones may then be filtered to ensure that they do not reach the communication assistant and the hearing party.

    • An audio information delivery system collects electronic data via Internet or other conveyance, and responsive to customer inquiries, selectively retrieves data from local stores in areas of interest to the inquiring customers, formats the data, and transmits the data in audio form to the customers via their telephones. Initially, an information delivery agency makes advance arrangements with remotely located content providers to repeatedly obtain information of prescribed character. Agency computers continually gather digitally stored audio and text information from the predefined content providers and assemble the gathered information into a universal database. Separately, the agency enrolls a number of individual customers, which includes obtaining each customer's preferences regarding information content and playback order. Responsive to a telephone call from a registered customer, agency's computers retrieve the caller's pre-stored preferences and proceed to identify information in the universal database that pertains to the caller's subject matter preferences. After preparing vocalizations of the text information, agency computer equipment audibly presents the audio information and vocalizations to the caller in predetermined order via the caller's telephone connection. This is achieved, for example, by using an intermediate telephone network such as a wireless carrier network.
