    • A layer-forming apparatus, particularly for the preparation of particle-board mats adapted to be compressed with heating in a platen or other press to form a coherent structure generally known as particle board, comprises a dispensing unit for metering the particulate matter onto a conveyor to form the layer and, between the dispensing unit and the conveyor, a classifying device for separating fine particles from coarser particles. The conveyor feeds a head which spreads the particles from the layer on a receiving surface. The receiving surface carries the mat and the head is designed to deposit the coarser particles of the layer from the conveyor either before or after the fine particles so that the fine particles form a facing zone on the bottom and/or top of the mat.

    • A board is formed by accumulating a mass of sugarcane rind fibers in a collection zone ahead of a horizontally reciprocable first-stage plunger that has a sweep face. The first-stage plunger is shifted horizontally toward a fiber compression zone to horizontally compact the sugarcane rind fibers and orient the fibers in vertical planes disposed substantially parallel to the sweep face. A second-stage plunger is shifted vertically downwardly from above the compression zone to push the horizontally compacted sugarcane rind fibers downwardly into a generally vertical passage means while vertically compressing the fibers. Consequently, the fibers are oriented in substantially horizontal planes to define a board segment comprised of sugarcane rind fibers having their axes disposed substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the board segment. The steps of accumulating, horizontally shifting, and vertically shifting are repeated to establish a column of abutting board segments in the extrusion passage. The board segments are heated at a heating station to melt natural resinous binder substances of the sugarcane rind fibers. Subsequently, the board segments are cooled at a setting station located below said heating station to reharden the natural resinous binder substances and bind together the board segments into a unitary board structure.

    • A mat formed of a mixture of board particles and a bonding agent is conveyed to oppositely rotating rollers which compress said mat to a desired thickness as the mat passes therethrough. A conveyor associated with the rollers is provided for carrying the compressed mat between a pair of platens mounted in a fixed relationship with respect to the continuously moving mat. As it passes between the platens, the mat is supported by a fluid bearing and is exposed to heat to cure the bonding agent. The platens are internally divided into separate subcompartments. The pressure in these subcompartments is regulated such that the mat is subjected to controlled pressures as it moves past the platens.

    • A process for making a particle board of substantial continuous thickness utilizing any of a wide assortment of comminuted lignocellulosic materials. The particle board is prepared by mixing dried lignocellulosic particles with one or more thermosetting or thermoplastic adhesive binders in predetermined proportions, and placing a measured amount of the resultant mixture in an elongate mold where it is bonded together under the influence of pressure and heat. The mold includes a movable pressure plate forming the top of an enclosure within which the material is compressed to a predetermined thickness by pressure applied to the exterior of the plate. The thickness of the compressed mixture is substantial, so as to enable the production of particle board pieces having sufficient continuous solid thickness that they may be used for such applications as dimension lumber or railroad ties, or may be sawed into multiple thinner pieces for other applications such as siding. After the mixture in the mold has been compressed to the predetermined thickness, fasteners are attached for retaining the pressure plate in its compressed position. Thereafter the mold is taken from the press and transferred to an oven where its contents, still under pressure from the retained pressure plate, are baked or cured for an extended period of time and then allowed to cool, after which the pressure plate is removed from the mold permitting the removal of the resultant bonded particle board product.

    • A multilevel vulcanizing press is provided which includes a press housing having at least two press levels. Each press level is capable of receiving a molding tool which can be opened and closed within the press housing. Each molding tool is comprised of a plurality of molding plates and can be opened at right angles to the mold parting plane. First and second servicing stations are provided on different sides of the press housing, with each station being able to accommodate a molding tool from each level of the press housing. A first holding station is provided between the press housing and first servicing station for receiving a molding tool from each level of the press housing and a second holding station is provided between the press housing and second servicing station for receiving a molding tool from each level of the press housing. Guide means are provided for guiding each molding tool from the press housing into one of the holding stations and into one of the servicing stations and vice versa.
