With sleeve 8 cammed to the illustrated position by eccentric 10 on a rotatable shaft 11, a toothed ring 5 fast with the spindle will be prevented from being moved rearwardly into engagement with a second toothed ring 6 secured in the housing 1 upon the tool being pressed against a workpiece. The teeth on the rings have the form illustrated in Fig. 3, and the angle a is not greater than 65 degrees, and preferably 45 degrees. Thus with the tool conditioned as shown and used as a drill (i.e. with a drill bit attached to the spindle and with the spindle rotated in the one sense), it will perform pure rotary drilling. Rotating knob 14 through 180 degrees will allow the rings to engage when the spindle is forced rearwardly into the housing 1 against the force of spring 20; thus in this condition the tool with a drill bit will perform rotary percussive drilling and the flanks 31 of the teeth on the rotary ring 5 will be the leading flanks and will ride up flanks 31 of the teeth on the stationary ring 6. When used for screwing in and unscrewing, the spindle is rotated in the one sense and the reverse sense respectively, and the rings 5, 6 are prevented from engaging. Should the rings engage during unscrewing, jamming will not occur since the teeth will ride over each other due to the inclination of the flanks 32.

    • A hammer drill includes a housing, a first ratchet fixed to the housing, a spindle rotatably supported by the housing about an axis, and a second ratchet coupled for co-rotation with the spindle. The second ratchet is engageable with the first ratchet in response to rearward displacement of the spindle to impart a hammering action on the spindle. The hammer drill further includes a thrust bearing having an arm extending away from the axis, and a selector ring having a post extending toward the arm. The selector ring is rotatable between a first position in which the post is engageable with the arm to limit the rearward displacement of the spindle and prevent engagement of the first and second ratchets, and a second position in which the post is misaligned with the arm to permit the rearward displacement of the spindle and engagement of the first and second ratchets.

    • A rotary hammer has a hammer body with an electric motor section which comprises a receiving section for receiving transmission mechanisms in a frame which serves as a shell barrel. A driving electric motor is installed in the shell barrel. The body also has a vibration and transmission mechanism section in which the transmission mechanisms including the motion conversion transmission mechanism and the vibrating mechanism are held by a bracket removably connected to the frame. In addition, the hammer body has a tool holding section in which the tool holding member for concomitantly rotatably holding the tool is rotatably supported by a bracket removably connected to the frame. The three sections are so arranged that they can be assembled and disassembled individually as separate component units.
