    • A novel controlled descent device is disclosed which not only aids in the ascent of a human being from a lower elevation to an upper elevation but also provides for the safe descent of a human being from the upper level to the lower level. The apparatus comprises a round cable, a counterweight, a controlled descent pulley having a ratchet and pawl brake system and a conventional pulley; all operating conjunctly dependently on the position and situation of the human being. The controlled descent pulley and conventional pulley are held in a plate structure which is secured to the upper elevation. The counterweight is raised and lowered from the upper elevation to the lower elevation and vice-versa by means of a guy wire which is anchored and held in relatively taught position between said upper elevation and said lower elevation.

    • A new and improved tension relieving mechanism is provided which may be easily controlled and which has few operating parts. The tension relieving mechanism utilizes a coiled spring for clutching a turnable member connected to the seat belt reel shaft. Members associated with the seat belt retractor provide camming and stopping surfaces to engage end portions of the clutch spring to alternately expand and allow contraction of the spring coil to release or grip a frictional surface of the turnable member. With the clutch spring abutting a stopping surface and urged by the reel spring in a belt retraction direction so that the natural contraction of the clutch spring on the frictional surface is encouraged, the reel shaft is locked against rotation in the belt retraction direction providing a release of tension on the belt. The grip of the clutch spring on the turnable member may be released with a minimal amount of force by urging the end portions of the clutch spring radially outward to enlarge the clutch spring coil.

    • A seat belt winding apparatus for a vehicle comprises a winding reel and spring means having one end connected to the winding reel and the other end connected to a stationary part of the apparatus. The spring means is constituted by two spiral springs connected to each other though an interposed ratchet gear rotatably mounted on a stationary part of the apparatus. There is provided for controlling rotation of the ratchet gear controlling means which includes a pawl adapted to releasably engage with the ratchet gear, electro-magnetic means for selectively actuating the pawl and a switch which responds to the states of the vehicle to selectively energize the electro-magnetic actuator means, thereby to control the combined force of the first and second springs in dependence on whether the pawl is engaged with the ratchet gear or not and hence in dependence upon the prevailing states of the vehicle.

    • An emergency spool release for use with a seat belt retractor mechanism is shown wherein the seat belt mechanism includes a spool for storing a belt which restrains the passenger of a vehicle during an emergency. The belt is urged into a retracted position by spring means while the protracted position of the belt is restrained in an emergency by the automatic engagement of a locking pawl against ratchet teeth found on the periphery of the spool. The automatic engagement is accomplished by a unique inertia locking system which uses two sets of pawls and two ratchets. The first locking pawl mounts a second pawl which is placed in motion by an inertia mass also mounted upon the first pawl. The second pawl engages a second set of ratchet teeth which pull the second pawl and thus the first pawl into engagement with the first set of ratchet teeth to lock the spool.

    • A seat belt retractor and locking mechanism includes a cable attached to the restraint belt and attached to a spring biased reel. A housing encircles the cable and encloses first and second collet members having aligned inner walls with mating recesses defining a cable passage therethrough and opposed-facing angularly-inclined outer walls. First and second rollers are interposed respectively between the housing and the inclined outer walls of the collet members. A pair of spring clips acting between the collet members and an adjustable support plate for the rollers cooperate to establish a normal spaced apart position of the collet members in which the cable passes freely through the cable passage during belt extension and retraction induced by winding and unwinding of the cable from the reel. A pendulum sensitive to a predetermined magnitude of vehicle deceleration is effective to initiate axial movement of the collet members so that the rollers coact with the inclined outer walls to contract the collet members into gripping engagement with the cable. The forward momentum of the occupant imparts a load on the restraint belt and cable so that the coaction between the rollers and the inclined outer walls cause the cable to be progressively gripped to thereby lock the effective length of the restraint belt.

The load bearing portion of the outer ring includes a generally central rectilinear segment having a length equivalent to about one width of the belt and a curvilinear segment located each side of the rectilinear segment. An inner spacer means is mounted on the mounting portion of the outer ring and includes a spacer wall which extends in parallel spaced relation from the rectilinear and curvilinear segments of the outer ring load bearing portions at a distance therefrom less than twice the thickness of the belt to define therewith a relatively narrow arcuately arranged belt passage slot. The belt may shift laterally between the central rectilinear segment and the curvilinear segments during longitudinal belt passage therethrough to accommodate a range of variation in the angle of belt departure and entry relative the mounted position of the guide ring assembly.
