    • An environmental insect control apparatus for forcing insects out of the ground for extermination by flooding the insect habitation. The apparatus includes a perimeter wall for being recessed into the ground surrounding an insect habitation, which forms an enclosed treatment area for the extermination of insects as the insects leave the habitation. A trough is formed between an interior ledge and an upper portion of the perimeter wall. Water circulates through the trough and around the interior side of the wall. The water cascades into the enclosed treatment area to form a pool of water that flood the ant mound. As the water cascades over the lip of the interior ledge, insects attempting to crawl up and out of the trap are swept back down. The insects are thereby forced out of the ground by the water and trapped by the recessed perimeter wall where they can be exterminated.

    • Surface ground kits for controlling arthropods such as termites, carpenter ants, fire ants, roaches, and the like, and combinations thereof. Embodiments can include mounting a chamber on a ground insertable member having an edible food source, such as a wood stake, and pressing the member into the ground until the chamber is against the ground surface. The chamber can be cylindrical disc shape having one closed end and closed sides, such as plastic cup, Petri dish, and the like. Optionally, the chamber can be non-opaque so that the interior contents can be viewed from outside the chamber. The lower open end of the chamber can be a layer of an edible non-toxic material such as a layer of foam, and the like. On top of the edible layer, can be a layer of a non-edible foraging matrix that contains the slow-acting non-repellent toxicant within the foraging matrix, and this layer can be visible through the top closed portion of the chamber. Arthropods can be attracted to the kit device by the edible portion of the ground insertable member. The arthropods can then pass through the edible foam type layer in the open end of the chamber and then forage into the layer containing the non-edible material which is mixed with the slow-acting non-repellent toxicants. The arthropods leave the chamber in the same direction they came taking the slow-acting non-repellent toxicant back to their galleries and colonies where the arthropods are killed over time. Ground engaging members such as stake(s) and/or teeth and/or lower extending edges can also be used. Removable lid portions such as snap tops, screwable threads, and hinged tops can allow the chambers to be monitored and/or reusuable overtime.

    • A bait station is disclosed, having a base section with a floor and a continuous upstanding sidewall extending along the periphery thereof. A cap is constructed and arranged to be received on the base section in a snap-fit. At least one opening is defined within the sidewall of the base section, and a bait cup is disposed therein. An annular ridge is formed on the exterior of the base section sidewall, the cap having a correspondingly sized and shaped flange for being passed thereover to snap-fit the cap on the base section. The base section may also have a flange passing about the sidewall and extending radially away therefrom, which flange is sized and shaped to receive a leading edge of the cap thereon when the cap is snap-fit to the base section. The sidewall flange includes a separate upstanding sidewall extending therealong for defining a channel sized to receive the leading edge of the cap therein.

    • A termite colony is treated with a termiticide by locating a bait station on or beneath ground surface, adjacent a building, to attract termites in the region. The bait station container holds nontoxic cellulose bait. An opening in the bottom permits termites' ingress and egress to feed on the bait within the container. An opening in the top permits termite activity within the container to be monitored without disturbing the bait within the container and permits a termiticide to be introduced directly into the soil and termite tunnel tubes beneath the container by passing a termiticide injection tube through the openings in the container and into the soil beneath the container. Preferably, the termiticide is a non-repellent termiticide, which is lethal to termites through ingestion, contact and/or transferal.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling ants and other pests are provided. A micromachine has a battery and a remotely actuatable electrical switch operatively associated therewith. The micromachine has at least a portion thereof covered by an ant attractant such as food or bait, for example. The micromachine is of such size and weight as to be readily transportable by a fire ant or carpenter ant or other pest. In one embodiment, a resistance heating element is energized by the battery when the switch is closed thereby causing communication between a recess containing a pheromone or fungus or other ant controllant substance and the exterior of the micromachine. In an alternate embodiment, a radio frequency transmitter will emit a signal to assist with location of the ant or pest nests and thereby permit action to be taken to control the ants. Vibration of the micromachine is preferably effected at intermittent periods. In further embodiments of the invention which are particularly advantageous in respect of rodent pests but are usable in connection with other pests, a micromachine may contain an explosive material which is detonated by the closing of a switch to permit a battery to energize a detonator. The switch may be remotely actuated as by a radio frequency signal or may in some instances, for example, when the micromachine has been ingested by the pest, be chemically activated as in a pH sensor or glucose sensor, for example. In other embodiments, odors which are attractants to pests may be released, neutralizing agents which neutralize the pest control material may be intermingled with the pest control material to neutralize the same and micromachines may be placed within tubes, boxes or other enclosures or an other article through which rodent pests may pass and pick up the micromachines with their grooming habits contributing to ingestion of the same. The micromachines may have transmitters which, when activated, will facilitate locating the device.

    • Apparatus and method for detecting the presence of wood destroying subterranean termites. The apparatus includes a housing having a hollow chamber with a closed upper portion (top) and an open lower portion (bottom) that is secured to a monitor stick to be inserted in the ground. The hollow chamber top has a peripheral flange that overhangs or extends beyond the perimeter of the chamber. A monitor stick is inserted into and secured in the chamber interior and in the ground. The top is provided with an aperture having a penetrable seal such that a combustible gas detector can be inserted into the chamber to measure the combustible gas in the chamber. When wood destroying termites are present and attacking the monitor stick, they generate combustible gas that becomes trapped in the closed hollow chamber and can be detected by the combustible gas detector. A second material also can be used, e.g., cardboard wrapped around the monitor stick to attract the pests. A plurality of monitors can be used to provide detection for a given structure and allow for detection prior to the structure becoming infested and structurally damaged.
