    • A housing for electrical equipment, for insertion into an installation opening of a switching panel, includes a housing body which can be pushed through the installation opening in an insertion direction and a covering wall connected to the housing body which extends generally transversely to the insertion direction. The covering wall includes a collar which projects outwardly beyond the housing body in a direction which is transverse to the insertion direction, such that the collar limits insertion of the housing body into the opening. A plurality of lugs are connected to the housing body, and each of the lugs has a free end and is resiliently biased toward an initial position relative to the housing body. The housing body has a pair of side walls, and each of the pair of side walls supports an end of at least one corresponding one of the plurality of lugs at an acute angle thereto. Each free end extends to a location which is adjacent to the collar of the covering wall. Each of the lugs has a toothed detent surface in the vicinity of its free end for securing the housing body within the installation opening. Each of the plurality of lugs has a supporting bar which supports a supporting end, and the supporting bar extends from the free end inwardly toward a respective one of the pair of side walls. Each supporting end is resiliently engageable with an adjacent one of the pair of side walls when the housing body is in the installed position.

    • A retaining device releasably mounts and retains an electrical unit, such as a circuit breaker, within a panel opening. A face plate on the unit overlaps the panel to stop the unit at the panel opening. The retaining device has at least one resilient retaining arm projecting from the unit having a cam surface for engaging an edge of the opening to depress the retaining arm from an original position as the unit is inserted until a retaining surface of the arm passes the edge of the opening and allows the retaining arm to move back toward its original position to hold the panel against the face plate. The retaining device includes a separate lock arm projecting from the unit having a latch element and a latch release. Depression of the lock arm from an original position during insertion of the unit into the opening permits the latch element to clear the edge and pass through the opening. Thereafter, the return of the lock arm toward its original position permits the latch element to abut the panel to prevent withdrawal of the unit from the opening unless the latch release is actuated to depress the lock arm as the unit is withdrawn to permit the latch element to clear the edge and pass back through the opening as the retaining arm resiliently yields against the edge and passes back through the opening.

    • A snap-in panel mount circuit breaker has a case and a locking dog means including a rigid member with a cammed outer surface mounted in the case. A first set of lugs extends from opposite sides of the rigid member and are disposed in cooperating pivot openings in the case to form a pivot axis about which the rigid member is moveable between a first position, in which the rigid member projects outwardly of the case, and a second position, in which the rigid member is disposed substantially flush with the case. A second set of lugs extends from the rigid member in spaced relation to the first lugs. The second lugs are disposed in a guide channel in the case to define the arc of rotation of the rigid member about the pivot axis. A bias spring contained in the case engages the locking dog means to normally urge the locking dog means towards the first position.

After the outer end portion of the bushing has been inserted through the mounting hole, the retainer member returns to its normally expanded position where a portion overlies the front of the panel in the area surrounding the mounting hole and is held in tight engagement therewith by a back-up spring.

After the outer end portion of the bushing has been inserted through the mounting hole, the retainer member returns to its normally expanded position where a portion overlies the front of the panel in the area surrounding the mounting hole and is held in tight engagement therewith by a back-up spring.In one embodiment, the retainer member is in the form of a split or snap ring having a beveled leading edge portion which engages the back rim of the panel mounting hole and a plurality of integral spring fingers which extend inwardly from the inner periphery thereof and bear against an inner wall of the bushing groove to center the snap ring over the hole.In another embodiment, the beveled snap ring has an annular undercut in the trailing edge portion which, prior to mounting, receives the upper end of a coil back-up spring encircling the bushing with the lower end thereof bearing against the switch frame. As the bushing is inserted through the mounting hole, the upper end of the spring is disengaged from the ring and thereafter bears against the back of the panel.In a further embodiment, the retainer member is a helical garter spring and the bushing groove is provided with a tapered inner wall which permits the garter spring to be cammed inwardly to a compressed condition during initial insertion of the bushing and guides the garter spring to a centered position as it expands to its free state after the bushing has been inserted through the hole.
