    • A method for determining a topology of an apparatus for processing physical documents. The apparatus comprises processing modules and a central control unit. The central control unit and the processing modules are connected by central communication connections. A module commmunication connection connects the processing modules in series. The module communication connection has a data flow direction with a predetermined orientation with respect to the processing direction. A processing module upstream in the data flow direction sends first network configuration data. The first network configuration data represents the topology of an upstream part of the data communication network located upstream of the downstream processing module and contains the upstream processing module. A downstream processing module generates second network configuration data on the basis of the first configuration data, which represents the topology of the part of the data communication network that contains the downstream processing module and the part located upstream of the downstream processing module. The downstream processing module sends the second network configuration data to the central control unit. The central control unit determines the topology on the basis thereof.

The control system has a computing unit capable of executing both basic control functions of the powertrain and ancillary control functions not directly related to the control of the powertrain. The computing unit comprises a main processor, which is dedicated to executing basic functions for controlling the powertrain, at least one auxiliary processor, which is dedicated to executing ancillary control functions, a number of memories, a series of peripheral devices, at least one peripheral bus connection, to which the peripheral devices are connected, and an intelligent main bus connection of the cross-bar bus type to allow the processors to communicate with the memories and with the peripheral bus connection.

    • A control arrangement for a multifunction appliance such as a cooking appliance wherein the control activity is distributed among a plurality of microprocessor based control circuits. In the exemplary embodiment each control circuit is associated with a different function of the appliance. The circuits are physically separated from one another and communicate on data bus lines. Due to the high transient conditions in such an appliance, the communications are in accordance with a redundant protocol to substantially eliminate erroneous data communication. The data bus protocol is devised such that deletion, addition and replacement of control circuits in a system, even to the point of substituting a circuit containing a different type of processor, is possible.
