    • Applicant's invention is a lightweight solar collection system, supported overhead, having a parabolic reflecting trough which continuously rotates about a fluid-filled collection conduit located at the trough's focal point. The system is supported overhead preventing bending of the collection conduit, ensuring that solar rays reflected off the trough will continuously focus on the conduit. A tracking system, cooperating with the reflection assembly, monitors the location of the sun, cuing the motor when rotation of the trough is required for maximum heat collection. The efficiency acquired through a reflection assembly supported and braced overhead used in cooperation with a system monitoring movement of the sun, allows solar heat collection for operation of a cooling and heating unit simply and economically.

    • A solar energy conversion apparatus which includes a reflective parabolic trough which tracks the sun the control means therefor being such that the trough rotates about a north-south axis alternately to east and west extreme positions until the driving motor is disabled by equal irradiation of a pair of phototransistors. The phototransistors are aligned relative to the axis of the trough such that they are equally irradiated when the sun's rays are concentrated on a heat transfer tube extending along the axis of the trough. The apparatus has a flexible disc drive member to mechanically couple the trough to the drive motor. The heat transfer conduit is of relatively small capacity and a two-phase flow therein is utilized so as to conserve energy.

    • A normally flat, rectangular mirror element is supported on the front surface of a normally flat, rectangular backing element, which is more rigid than the mirror element. A pair of spacer elements are positioned between the mirror element and the backing element to raise the mirror element above the backing element. The spacer elements are located adjacent one pair of parallel edges of the mirror element. To curve the mirror about a central longitudinal bending axis which is parallel to the spacer elements, the mirror is depressed at its center, along the longitudinal axis, and secured to the backing element by a strip of double sided adhesive tape, which maintains the mirror element in the depressed position. To impart a concave curvature to the mirror element, the mirror element and the backing element are both curved about a transverse bending axis, which is orthogonal to the longitudinal bending axis, by pulling the backing element in a direction away from the mirror element while supporting two edges of the backing element on a frame to provide resistance to the pulling. The backing element is pulled by a rod which is secured by one end to the backing element and which threads into a turnbuckle at the other end. The turnbuckle is joined to a portion of the frame by another rod which extends from the frame and which also threads into the turnbuckle. Rotation of the turnbuckle varies the degree of curvature of the backing element and the mirror element about the transverse axis.

    • In accordance with the present invention, an improved collector means for a solar energy collector system having an absorber plate and a glazing panel spaced from at least one side of the absorber plate in which a cap means is coupled to and extends along one edge of the absorber plate and a depending leg extends over the complimentary edge of the glazing panel, the cap means having formed therein at least one air channel conforming in shape to the cross-sectional shape of the cap means and having air inlet means adjacent the bottom of a leg of the cap means in communication with the channel and an air outlet means adjacent the top of the cap means and in communication with the channel and adapted to permit currents of cooling air to pass therethrough from the inlet to the outlet, thereby maintaining said complimentary edge of the glazing panel relatively cool. In a preferred embodiment, the improved collector means is mounted edgewise adjacent the bottom of a parabolic trough-type reflector means and has a glazing panel on both exposed sides thereof. In accordance with a further embodiment of the present invention, the glazing panel is a flexible sheet material detachably coupled adjacent one edge of the absorber plate and the other end of a glazing material comprises a supply roll mounted adjacent the other edge of the absorber plate, whereby a fresh surface of glazing sheet material can be withdrawn from the roll and mounted parallel to the absorber plate as needed. Preferably, the roll of glazing sheet material is spring loaded so as to maintain the material taut, for example by a window shade-type roll means.

    • A solar collector comprises an upper transparent flexible cover and a lowereflectively metallized sheet, the upper cover and the lower sheet both being flexible and the space between them being inflated under gas pressure. The joint between the upper and lower members is closed by longitudinal stringers that are carried by upright side walls that protect the lower sheet against deformation by the force of the wind. Tubes carrying the liquid to be heated are disposed within the inflated enclosure, the sun's rays being concentrated on them by the reflective coating on the lower sheet; and these tubes are appropriately moved so as to follow the focal point of the lower reflector as the reflector and the sun move relative to each other during the day.

    • A collapsible structural assembly including first and second flexible sheets disposed in confronting relationship to one another is disclosed herein. The assembly also includes an arrangement of ribs located between and connected with the sheets so as to support the sheets as a single unit for movement between a first collapsed position such that the sheets lie flat and adjacent one another with the ribs therebetween and a second extended position such that sheets have predetermined curved configurations and the ribs serve as structural reinforcements therebetween. In the actual embodiment disclosed, one of the sheets includes an outermost light reflective surface and the predetermined curvature conferred upon the sheets including the light reflective surface is that of a parabola. In this way, the entire assembly may serve as a trough-line parabolic concentrator comprising part of an overall solar collector.

    • A mirror mounting is described in which a plane rectangular reflecting strip is deformed along the two longer edges thereof so that it is approximately tangent to the ideal mirror while the strip remains substantially flat in the direction of its shorter edges. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, a plurality of such reflecting strips are so formed by attachment to a supporting frame using a pair of elastomeric cushion frames to embrace the longer sides of each strip while leaving the shorter sides free. Advantageously, each reflecting strip on the frame is bent in a continuous manner the full distance of its longer side. The frame is preferably a rigid array of parallel channel members each of which is adapted to receive a curved T-section angle bar having the desired curvature of the reflecting strip. The angle bars are deformed into this curvature in a separate operation while they are being attached to the channel members. Specific apparatus for deforming the reflecting strips into conformity with the curved angle bars and for attaching the strips to the cushion frames is also described.
