    • The invention relates to a push grid comprising grid panels which overlap one another and which are alternately fixed and reciprocable longitudinally of the push grid; grid panel supports provided with a slot-like opening for holding the grid panels; tie members which project through the slot-like opening in the grid panel supports and which, at one end, engage in the associated grid panel; and spring elements arranged between the other end of the tie members and a web of the grid panel supports accommodating the slot-like opening for biassing the connection between the grid panels and the grid panel supports. In order to obtain reliable fixing of the grid panels to the grid panel support, for example even in the event of an excessive increase in length of the tie members or in the event of breakage of the spring elements, the web (7) with the slot-like opening (6) is arranged inclined relative to the horizontal and the suspension point (14) of the tie member (4) on the grid panel (1) is situated at a greater distance from the lower than from the upper end of the slot-like opening (6) (FIG. 2).

    • A grate assembly for a furnace for incinerating material comprises rows of moving grate bars which are arranged between rows of stationary grate bars and which are individually driven by drives arranged exteriorly of a combustion zone located beneath the rows of grate bars. Interposed between the grate bars and the drive are a lever system including a swivel lever fastened to a torsion shaft and a slide guide attachment for effecting approximately rectilinear movement of the moving grate bars. The torsion shaft is supported on sidewalls of the combustion zone and is rotatable and slideable by means of a bearing support which pivots about a shaft. Due to the approximately rectilinear movement and the optional, individual adjustment of the movement of adjacent moving rows of grate bars, the incineration behaviour of the material may be taken into consideration to a large extent and the drives may be easily maintained since they are readily accessible.

    • A method and apparatus for incinerating combustible materials wherein the movement of the material particles is controlled as they are moved over an arrangement of grate sections during combustion in relation to particle density so that less dense particles travel faster than more dense particles to provide for increased combustion efficiency. The grate sections are arranged in adjacent groups and in an alined, downstepped succession. Each grate section has a downwardly inclined, upper support surface and a reciprocating pusher block is moved an adjustable distance over an inlet end portion of the upper support surface of each pusher block to impart moving forces through the material in a pushing stroke that is substantially shorter than the full travel distance of the material along the associated grate section. An adjustable speed, reversible drive is coupled to the pusher blocks so as to provide related, opposite, reciprocating movement of adjacent pusher blocks and related in-phase movement of a succession of alined pusher blocks. An escapement coupling between each pusher block and an associated grate section provides for limited reciprocating movement of each grate section, and opposite movement of adjacent grate sections in each group of adjacent grate sections causes a shearing of the material to prevent clinker buildup.

    • An incinerator stoker has a stepped stationary hearth with alternate horizontal step surfaces and vertical walls or risers and has a plurality of movable hearths which are reciprocatable by suitable driving means on the horizontal step surfaces through openings in the risers of the stationary hearth. Air for combustion is forced through vents in the risers and in vertical front wall portions of the movable hearths. There is no gap in the surface of the stoker other than the movable hearths openings and the vents, all of which are in vertical surfaces. The driving means can be arranged to reciprocate the movable hearths in groups and in any sequence desired to improve the agitating action and to further reduce the possibility of material being incinerated entering or clogging the openings or vents. One stoker construction disclosed comprises cast L-shaped and inverted channel shaped step members which are mounted alternately in side-by-side relation on suitable supporting structure across the width of each step with movable hearths being positioned within the inverted channel step members and being supported for in and out movement on the L-shaped step members of the next lower step.
