    • The present invention relates to a method and a network control node for tracing activity and monitoring performance of user equipments in a partly IP-based wireless communications network. The wireless communications network comprises operator controllable and/or operator uncontrollable wireless access points in communication with a network control node via one or more operator controllable and/or operator uncontrollable Internet Protocol, IP, networks. The described method is characterized by a first step of receiving a trace triggering request and user equipment identification, at a network control node, from a first network node. Alternatively, the trace triggering request is received on a signaling connection that explicitly identifies the user equipment. The network control node then starts a trace recording and information retrieval procedure relating to the identified user equipment and identifies all used IP networks and user equipment serving access point. The method further comprises the steps of analyzing the IP networks used between the network node and the user equipment and/or analyzing the user equipment serving access point. Thereafter, a trace printout is created including analyzing results and retrieved information, the printout is to be sent to a second network node, or stored locally for later retrieval.

    • A mobile station is adapted to communicate with a core network portion of a mobile communications network via an unlicensed radio access network. The mobile station has a SIM card adapted to generate a unique response word using at least a key unique to the mobile station and a fixed length random number. The mobile station includes processing circuitry and unlicensed radio interface circuitry coupled to the processing circuitry. This circuitry is adapted to generate a fixed-length random number, calculate a first response word with the SIM card on the basis of the generated random number, formulate and transmit an authentication request to the unlicensed radio access network containing the fixed-length random number, receive an authentication response from the unlicensed radio access network containing a second response word, and compare the calculated first response word with the received second word to authenticate said core network. In this manner, mobile station is able to authenticate the network with an existing second generation SIM card and with minimum modification of its operation.

    • When certain types of data, such as voice data, is sent over an IP-based network a problem can occur if this data passes a network address translator NAT, which is unable to identify and translate address information contained in the payload portion of a message. Voice-over-IP requires the initial establishment of a connection including the signalling of the address information for receipt of voice data. In accordance with the invention, a node (60) connected to a public network (50) is adapted to determine when address information received from a second node (10) in the payload portion of a voice-path-establishment message is different from the source address in the header of a voice packet received subsequently from the second node. A difference indicates that a NAT function is operating and the node (60) sends voice packets to the address identified in the voice packet header rather to that identified in the earlier message.
