    • PURPOSE:To obtain an image with a large contrast ratio by using a screen formed by providing a diffuse reflecting layer of metallic foil, etc., which has a fine projection-recess part on the surface and anisotropic diffuse reflection characteristics on the surface of a backing substrate, and forming a louver layer which is constituted at fine pitch on the surface of the screen. CONSTITUTION:The fine projection-recess part is provided on the surface of the backing substrate 1 made of resin, wood, etc., metallic foil of Al, etc., is stuck by vapor deposition, adhesion, etc., to form the diffuse reflecting layer 2 which has large anisotropic diffuse reflection characteristics, and the parallel louver layer 3 is provided on the surface, thereby constituting a reflection type screen. The louver layer 3 cuts off light whose angle is larger than an angle determined by the pitch and thickness, so the angle of visibility is also determined by the louver layer 3. Therefore, an observer is not affected when the cut-off angle of the louver layer 3 is set to 20-30 deg. above and below the perpendicular to the screen. Further, the screen gain of the diffuse reflecting layer is decreased and the diffusibility is increased to increase the right and left angle of visibility, so the angle of visibility is wide, specially, in the right-left direction even in bright lighting and a bright image is obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To increase a response speed and to obtain high contrast by applying alternately a liquid crystal composite with electric fields whose frequencies are lower and higher than a cross frequency at which dielectric anisotropy is zero. CONSTITUTION:When an electric field of frequency fL lower than the cross frequency where the dielectric anisotropy is zero is applied to a cholesteric phase having the planar structure of the liquid crystal composite whose dielectric anisotropy is positive at the lower frequency and negative at a higher frequency fH, a force operates to direct axes of molecules in the direction of the electric field, so that a nematic phase is entered. When a voltage of frequency fH is applied, on the other hand, the axes of molecules are directed at right angles and transition to not focal conic structure, but the planar structure is made. Thus, electric fields of different frequencies are applied alternately to obtain high-speed switch operation having not memory property and the spiral pitch of the cholesteric phase is made smaller to increase the contrast of a phase shift type guest-host mode display.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid-crystal optical switch capable of high-speed switching by providing a ρ cell charged with liquid crystal oriented in quasi- parallel so that pre-tilt directions of liquid-crystal molecules on substrate interfaces are symmetric about the center plane between substrates.
      CONSTITUTION: The liquid-crystal optical switch which has a means for cutting off linear polarized light by total reflection in liquid-crystal phase is provided with the liquid-crystal cell charged with the liquid crystal oriented in quasi- parallel between a couple of transparent substrates so that the pre-tilt direction of liquid-crystal molecules on one substrate interface and that of the other are symmetric about the center plane between both substrates. It is known that response speeds of the π cell in an ON state 5 wherein liquid-crystal molecules are oriented in the direction of an applied electric field and in a transient safe state 4 wherein no electric field is applied are far faster than the response speed of other structure transfer. Therefore, when linear polarized light having its transmission axis in the same or nearly the same direction with the liquid-crystal molecular axes of the ρ cell is made incident, the refrac tive index of the π cell is converted between n1 and n2 fast at each angle of incidence.

      CONSTITUTION: The switching element 6 is formed in a matrix on a transparent quartz glass plate 7, and it is combined with another transparent glass plate 2 to form the π cell liquid crystal panel. The panel is filled with liquid crystals so as to orient them as shown with the arrows 9 in the figure. Polarizing plates 1, 8 are applied to the outside of both glass plates 2, 7 so as to arrange their absorption axes 10 at a 45° to the orientation direction of the liquid crystals.
