    • In one aspect of the disclosed teachings, associating a plurality of contention-based uplink grants with a range of uplink resource blocks allows one contention-based uplink grant message to signal the entire plurality of grants. As an example in the LTE context, the signaling load on the PDCCH is reduced by using a single contention-based uplink grant message to signal a plurality of contention-based uplink grants. The message indicates an allocated set of uplink resource blocks and the number of separate uplink resource grants represented by the set is known or signaled, such that user terminals recognize that separate subsets of uplink resource blocks within the set each correspond to a separate contention-based uplink grant. Information included in the contention-based uplink grant message, or otherwise signaled can be used to control the probability at which the user terminals attempt contention-based uplink transmissions and/or to control the MCS used for such transmissions.

    • A method for setting up an activation time of a cell change of user equipment includes receiving a timing offset from a network controller through an active set update procedure and calculating a high speed downlink shared channel cell change activation time based on the timing offset. The activation time indicates when the user equipment can move to the target cell. The method also includes transmitting the calculated activation time to the network controller and receiving an approval of the downlink shared channel high speed cell change from the network controller. Additionally, the method includes moving from the serving cell to the target cell at the activation time if the approval has been received.

    • The technology in this application provides a method and apparatus for efficiently using common uplink radio resources, e.g. a common uplink enhanced-dedicated physical channel (E-DCH) resource. A UE releases a common E-DCH resource very quickly after a completed transmission. In addition or alternatively, a base station may release a common E-DCH resource configuration from the network side to free up common E-DCH resources for use by other UEs. A low overhead signaling scheme for quickly and effectively releasing of common E-DCH resources between a UE and a base station is also described. For example, existing signaling fields on protocol layer 2 (L2) or layer 1 (L1) may be used. In one preferred example embodiment, signaling fields already in use in a CELL_DCH service state are given a different meaning for UEs in a CELL_FACH service state so that common E-DCH resources are quickly and effectively released.
