    • 227,520. Melinsky, M. M. Oct. 16, 1923. Crystal detectors.- The usual wire con tact is replaced by metal foil or metal coated paper. A shown, the crystal is arranged between a pad e of metal foil and a constricted portion of a glass &c. tube d. The foil &c. is carried by a member f slidable within the tube and controlled by a screw g and spring h. Felt washers d are provided between the container and its supports. In a modification the container has a uniform bore and the crystal is mounted in a cup in the usual way, a mica washer being provided to prevent the foil making contact with the cup. In a further modification the crystal is movable and the foil fixed. According to the Provisional Specification, the contact rod is arranged vertically and carries the foil at its lower end in a crumpled mass. The rod is screwed in an endcap in a transparent cylinder and can be rotated without rotating the foil. Alternatively the foil may be secured to the arm between two nuts. The crystal is placed on a pad of foil and covered with a perforated mica washer and the. whole is secured together and to a conducting strip forming a terminal by adhesive tape. This unit is secured to the base by means of a groove in which the conducting strip slides.

    • 273,817. Lodge, Sir O. J., Robinson, E. E., and Melinsky, M. M. April 10, 1926. Thermionic amplifiers and detectors; coupling aerial and detector circuits; filter circuits. - Relates to selective non-radiating receiving circuits of the kind disclosed in Specifications 223,625 and 238,003, and comprises circuit arrangements in which the input impulses are applied to an untuned choke which has a single-wire connection to a low-resistance oscillatory circuit interposed between the choke and the amplifier or detector. As shown in Fig. 3, the aerial k is earthed through a choke e, which may comprise any untuned impedance, and the oscillatory circuit a is interposed between the aerial end of the choke and the grid of the rectifier valve. A grid condenser n and grid leak may also be provided. The rectifier may supply a low frequency amplifier through a transformer m shunted by selectable condensers q. Reaction is provided by a condenser p placed between the plate and the aerial; or the plate may be earthed and the filaments left unconnected to earth. In another arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the aerial end of the choke e, or a tapping t thereon, is connected to the filament, and the oscillatory circuit a placed betkveen the grid and filament, reaction being provided by an impedance R. The plate is connected through a second oscillatory circuit a and a block condenser to the grid of a second rectifying-valve. Reaction may also be provided by a separate coil in the plate circuit coupled to the coil of the oscillatory, circuit a. In Fig. 9 a pair of high-frequency amplifiers V1, V2 are interposed between the choked aerial e and the oscillatory circuit a, which is connected in series with a condenser between the plate of the valve V2 and the grid of the rectifier V3. Reaction is provided by an impedance R connected between the plates of the valves V3, V2. Additional oscillatory circuits may be interposed between the plates of the high-frequency valves and the succeeding grids, and where a chain of such circuits is employed, the damping should decrease in successive circuits. For crystal reception, Fig. 10, the oscillatory circuit a is connected in series with the crystals x and phones y across the whole or part of the choke e.

    • 238,003. Melinsky, M. M. May 8, 1924. Thermionic amplifiers, detectors, and generators. - The anodes of one or more valves are earthed either directly or through a condenser and there is included in the grid connection of one or more of the valves one or more low resistance oscillatory circuits f. Fig. 1 shows a valve e arranged for detecting and Fig. 3 the addition of a low frequency valve V2 the secondary of the transformer o, being connected to the grid and through a condenser o2 to the anode e and hence to earth h or alternatively to the negative side of the filament or a grid-biasing battery. An arrangement with a high frequency amplifying valve having a tuned anode circuit and connected to a detecting valve arranged as in Fig. 1 is also described in the Specification. A frame aerial may be used and connected between earth h and the aerial side of the condenser d. A transmitting circuit may be formed from the circuit in Fig. 1 by connecting the aerial side of condenser d to earth h and substituting the circuit c for the telephones j the aerial being connected to the high tension end of this circuit.
