In another embodiment a UE selects, using a predefined criteria (such as priority order among different reference signal types or predefined minimum threshold transmission density of a particular reference signal type), a different reference signal type other than regularly-spaced common reference signals, or a physical channel, for the RRM/RLM measurements. These are useful for example in EUTRAN Release 12 wherein the new carrier type may not have CRSs, or where the eNB can be in a dormant mode and not transmitting regularly-spaced CRSs.

    • A network node determines that there is second data to be sent to a second radio device (e.g., MTC device) and disposes it into a second padding bit portion of a downlink message which has in a first portion first data for a different first radio device (e.g., conventional UE). By example, the message comprises a MAC PDU and the first data comprises a SDU; the second padding bit portion comprises at least a data section comprising the second data and a subheader. The first and second devices can share a same C-RNTI, which the network broadcasts in system information. Multiple MTC data can be sent in the padding bit portion, by multiplexing N subheaders and multiplexing N data segments each corresponding to one of the N subheaders, where the N data segments are for N radio devices other than the first radio device. MTC devices read their data from the second padding bit portion while the conventional UE ignores it.

    • Various embodiments are detailed for triggering a RACH procedure via cross-scheduling so a UE can obtain a timing indication for a secondary component carrier CC. A network can send on a primary CC a PDCCH or MAC signaling with indices for a preamble, PRACH and the SCC; the UE sends the preamble on the PRACH of the secondary CC and gets the TA from the RACH procedure. Or the network can send RRC signaling that adds the SCC to the UE's configured set and which also has an indication to trigger the RACH procedure on the SCC. During a contention-based RACH procedure the network can send a PDCCH identifying a DL resource on the primary CC, and respond to the UE's preamble on that downlink resource with an absolute TA value for the secondary CC.
