    • A current control system for a switched reluctance motor that eliminates the effects of back EMF produced by such motor on the current control loop. The control system includes a current regulator that receives a current reference signal indicative of the desired output of the motor and a motor current signal indicative of the current in at least one phase winding of the motor. The regulator produces an output signal in response to the difference between the current reference signal and the motor current signal. The output of the regulator is a duty cycle command. A back EMF decoupler provides a back EMF signal indicative of the back EMF created by the motor and adds the back EMF signal to the current regulator output signal to provide a back EMF decoupled duty cycle command signal. An inverter circuit switches on and off the voltage to at least one phase winding of the motor in accordance with the back EMF decoupled duty cycle command signal to control the motor current and operate the motor.

    • An electric motor system includes an electric motor comprising a stator with windings and a rotor configured to operate at a motor speed; a cooling system comprising coolant configured to cool the rotor and the stator, the coolant having a coolant flow rate and a coolant temperature; an inverter module coupled to the electric motor and configured to provide current to the windings based on inverter control signals; a current regulated torque controller coupled to the inverter module and configured to generate the inverter control signals in response to a derated torque command; and a temperature estimation controller coupled to the current regulated torque controller and configured to generate the derated torque command based on an initial torque command and an estimated stator winding temperature. The temperature estimation controller is configured to estimate the estimated stator winding temperature based on the motor speed and the coolant flow rate.

    • A motor control processor is provided for motor phase current sampling of multiple variable frequency controlled electric motors, and includes an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter and a controller. The A/D converter has multiple analog inputs and generates a digital output signal in response to the multiple analog inputs. The controller is coupled to the A/D converter and determines a maximum desired switching frequency for a first one of the multiple variable frequency controlled electric motors. The controller further selects a base period in response to the maximum desired switching frequency and defines a phase shift time delay as a fraction of the base period so the controller may control the multiple analog inputs of the A/D converter to sample motor phase currents of each of the multiple variable frequency controlled electric motors at sample times determined by the controller in response to the base period and the phase shift time delay.

    • Methods and systems for controlling a power inverter in an electric drive system of an automobile are provided. The various embodiments control the power inverter by, responsive to a commanded torque of the electric motor being below a first torque level, controlling the power inverter to set a switching frequency of the power inverter at a first set frequency; and, responsive to the commanded torque of the electric motor being between the first torque level and a second torque level, controlling the power inverter to determine the switching frequency of the power inverter as a function of the commanded torque of the electric motor while maintaining the switching frequency above a dynamic frequency limit. The method reduces switching frequencies in the inverter at high commanded torques, while maintaining the switching frequencies above dynamic frequency limit that provides effective control over the motor.
