    • Formation of a continuous double sandwich braze joint (12) between a bit body (18) of a conical bit (10) and a carbide insert tip (20) disposed in a cylindrical recess (22) formed in a forward end (24) of the bit body (18) is facilitated by a cylindrical shim (14). In one form, the shim is a cylindrical sleeve having an annular sidewall (32) with opposite forward (34) and rearward (36) open ends. The insert tip (20) is received through the forward open end (34) of the sleeve (32). Also, a multiplicity of perforations (16) are defined in spaced apart relation through the sidewall (32) and uniformly distributed thereabout. The multiperforated sleeve is disposed within the bit body recess (22) and between its interior and the exterior of a cylindrical base (30) of the insert tip (22) such that the multiplicity of perforations (16) defined in the sleeve sidewall (32) provide a multiplicity of spaces extending between the bit body (18) and insert tip (22) for receiving braze therethrough. In an alternative form, the shim (14') is a cylindrical basket having a sidewall (32') and endwall (40). The sidewall (32') is open at its forward end (34') and closed at its rearward end (42) by the endwall (40). The basket also has a multiplicity of perforations (16') defined through and distributed uniformly about its sidewall (32') and endwall (40). The endwall (40) is frusto-conical shaped and protrudes away from the sidewall rearward end (42).

    • A drill (11) for forming holes in masonry includes a supporting body (13) having an axis of rotation (15) therethrough and a pair of inserts (17, 19) mounted at one end (2) thereof by mounting portions (23, 25). Each insert has a main cutting edge (27), and external cutting edge (33), an upper internal cutting edge (29) and a lower internal cutting edge (31). The upper and lower internal cutting edges define a center relief (35) having an upper conical shaped portion (37) with an angle of relief between about 60 to 90 degrees and a lower cylindrical shaped portion (39). There is a ratio of between about 5 to 8 between the diameter of the drill and the diameter of the lower cylindrical shaped portion. There is a ratio of between about 2 to 2.5 between the diameter of the drill and the largest diameter of the conical shaped portion.
