    • A method for operating an internal combustion engine especially of a motor vehicle is described wherein fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber either in a first operating mode during a compression phase or in a second operating mode during an induction phase. The fuel mass (mK), which is to be injected into the combustion chamber, is determined in both modes of operation, inter alia, in dependence upon a computed desired torque (Mdes) which is to be outputted by the engine. An injection duration (ti in ms) is determined from the fuel mass (mK) which is to be injected. Then, an injection angle (&agr;i in degrees) is determined from the injection duration (ti in ms) in dependence upon the rpm (nmotor) of the engine (1) Finally, the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber during the injection angle (&agr;i in degrees).

    • The invention is directed to a method for detecting a fill level of a tank system utilizing a pressure source, a bridge divider arrangement and a pressure measuring device. The pressure source is adapted to generate a change of pressure in the tank system. The pressure divider arrangement has a reference measuring unit which can be charged with pressure by the pressure source. The reference measuring unit further includes at least one flow resistor of a predetermined size in at least one reference flow branch. For measuring the tightness, the pressure measuring device simultaneously detects the difference of the pressure in the tank system and of the pressure in the reference measuring unit. In the method, the time-dependent trace of the difference pressure during at least one of a pressure build-up operation and a pressure decay operation is continuously detected. A conclusion is then drawn as to the fill level from the time-dependent trace.

For injection of fuel in a partial-load operating state of the internal combustion engine, a second selection is made from the at least one first injector and the at least one second injector having a second metering range, including the adjustment of a minimum fuel injection quantity required for operating the internal combustion engine. The first selection and the second selection are made differently, in such a way that only the metering range of the first selection includes the full-load injection quantity and/or that only the metering range of the second selection covers the minimum fuel injection quantity required for operating the internal combustion engine.
