    • The present invention provides a method of coating substrates with at least two coatings, wherein the same polymer or resin basecoat is employed in both of the two coatings. The first coating layer also includes an adhesion promoter, thereby eliminating a primer layer. Further, the present invention provides an automated or continuous coating line or coating system including a series of coating booths, each for applying one of a series waterborne or solvent borne coatings, wherein at least the first and second booth each comprises an applicator device and feed or supply controller for feeding a desired amount of the same basecoat formulation to an applicator device, and, further wherein the first booth comprises a feed or supply controller for feeding a desired amount of an adhesion promoter to the at least one applicator device. The coating line or system enables the continuous formation of primeness multi-layer coatings, e.g. basecoat, colorcoat and clearcoat on automotive plastic substrates, from a single paint composition, mixing in color or adhesion components as needed in each booth.

    • A miniaturized laser package is provided comprising a standard semiconductor laser package modified to accept a solid state microchip assembly pumped by the diode laser. Standard packages described in the invention include TO and HHL packages all of which are characterized by small dimensions, well sealed housing, robust mounting features, known characterized materials and economical production and assembly techniques characteristic of the semiconductor processing industry. In particular, the microchip lasers are produced using high density techniques that lend themselves to mass production, resulting in very low unit costs. At the same time, the compact laser devices provide a solution to the problem of providing laser radiation at high beam quality and good reliability features with a variety of wavelengths and operational characteristics and low noise features not available from diode lasers yet relying primarily on standardized designs, materials and techniques common to diode laser manufacturing. The devices constructed according to methods taught by the invention can therefore be readily integrated into numerous applications where power, reliability and performance are at a premium but low cost is essential, eventually replacing diode lasers in many existing systems but also enabling many new commercial, biomedical, scientific and military systems.

    • A system and method is described for manipulating text relative to a curved reference line in order to transform a character, rendered in a particular font, to generate a warped character with the degree of warping reflecting the local curvature of the curved reference line. The curvature of the reference line is reflected in the nature of quadilaterals, i.e., quads, generated for a corresponding rectangle on a straight reference line. The coordinates of the corners of the quad provide the parameters to carry out the transformation. Such rendering improves the appearance of the text and provides a method that modifies available fonts in a flexible fashion without the need to generate new fonts.

    • A full-time power transfer system is disclosed to include a transfer case having a clutch assembly arranged to control speed differentiation and torque biasing across an interaxle differential, sensors for detecting and generating sensor signals indicative of various dynamic and operational characteristics of the vehicle, and a controller for controlling actuation of the clutch assembly in response to the sensor signals. Upon the occurrence of traction loss, the clutch assembly is automatically actuated for limiting interaxle slip while transferring increased drive torque to the non-slipping driveline. Under a preferred adaptive control scheme, the actuated condition of the clutch assembly is controllably modulated between its non-actuated and fully-actuated limits for automatically varying the magnitude of speed differentiation and torque biasing across the interaxle differential in response to changes in the dynamic and operational characteristics of the vehicle.
