    • Alkanoic acid derivs. of formula (I) are new: X = H, halo or (p- or o- to the ether bridge) NO2, R1 = H 1-5C alkyl or 2-8C alkoxyalkyl, R2 = H, 1-5C alkyl or COOR3, A = CN or COB, B = OR4, SR4, NR5R6 or NR7R8R9. R3 and R4 = H or equiv. of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn1Ni or N+RaRbRcRd. They are also plant growth regulators e.g. they reduce vegetative growth of grasses and dicotyledons such as fruit trees. They have low toxicity to warm-blooded animals. The usual application is 0.1-5 kg/hectare.

    • Alkanoic acid derivs. of formula (I) are new. In (I) X is O or S; Y is H, halogen, CF3 or NO2; Z is H, halogen, NO2 or -CX-NH2; R1 is H, 1-4C alkyl or 2-8C alkoxyalkyl; R2 is H, 1-4C alkyl or -COOR; A is CN or -COB; B is OR3, SR4, NR5R6 or -NR7-NR8R9; R3 is H or 1/n Mn+; M is alkali (ne earth) cation, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni or +N(Ra)(Rb)(Rc)Rd); n = 1, 2 or 3; Ra-Rd are H, benzyl, or 1-4c alkyl opt. substd. by OH, NH2 or 1-4C alkoxy.
