摘要： An swage plate bumper overlies the swage plate of a suspension arm and the end of an actuator arm in a computer disc drive. The swage plate bumper may be molded in two pieces which snap together onto the actuator arm through the swaged hole. Alternatively, the swage plate bumper may be provided with an adhesive attachment to the swage plate, or the swage plate may be coated with a compressible coating during manufacture. The swage plate bumper extends over four corners of the swage plate and prevents damage to the disc surface which might otherwise be caused when the corners of the swage plate contact the disc during a drop or other sudden acceleration.

摘要： A separate elastic shroud to surround a disk pack is inserted into a disk drive housing after the disk pack and the actuator of the disk drive have been merged. This improvement simplifies manufacturing and assembly. The shroud may contain a filter which permits the passage of air from within the shrouded enclosure to outside the shrouded enclosure, and the filter is disposed in a region wherein a positive pressure exists within the disk pack enclosure relative to the pressure immediately outside the shroud. The shroud further may be provided with flanges or ribs which will engage the periphery of deflected disks of the disk pack to eliminate disk-to-disk contact, thereby reducing damage to the disk drive mechanisms and the disks proper. The shroud, filter design and placement, as well as the inlet and outlet shapes of the shroud each contribute therefore to reduce energy consumption and temperature rises within the disk drive.

摘要： A technique for preventing damage to ball bearings in a small form factor device where the drive motor has at least one crash stop ring disposed about the shaft and inside the rotor of the motor. The crash stop ring is dimensioned to permit only a small amount of movement of the rotor relative to the shaft. The permitted movement must be less than the minimum movement which would cause damage to the elements of the ball bearing. In an alternative embodiment, a rotor includes a flange extending in the radial direction from the rotor. A piezoelectric ring is rigidly mounted on both sides of the flange to engage one of the planar surfaces of the flange when the piezoelectric ring is in the relaxed state. With two such crash stop rings disposed so that the rings can engage both planar surfaces of the flange, the rotor is effectively clamped between the two piezoelectric crash stop rings whenever the piezoelectric crash stop ting is disconnected from the power source used to contract the piezoelectric material in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotor.

摘要： A disk drive contains an integrally-formed one-piece hub, clamp and rotor housing, which is preferably injection-molded plastic. In the preferred embodiment, the hub includes a hollow cylindrical portion for surrounding a set of bearings mounted on a central shaft, and a flange portion extending from the middle of the cylinder and supporting a single disk. Compliant clamping fingers on the upper surface of the flange engage the disk through its central hole. The fingers are inclined slightly outward, and include a pawl at the end of each finger. During assembly, the disk is forced over the pawls of the fingers until they engage the disk. The fingers, being slightly elastic, will deform to permit the disk to slide over the pawls, and then return to lock the disk in place. The fingers automatically center the disk about the hub axis, without the need for centering tools. The hub also serves as a housing for the rotor of a spindle motor which rotates the disk. A back iron ring and permanent magnets are attached to the underside of the flange at its outer edge to form the rotor. An electromagnetic stator assembly surrounds the disk axis in the annular space defined by the flange, the permanent magnets and back iron at the outer edge, and the cylindrical portion of the hub at the inner edge.

A similar arrangement is shown for a disk drive having a rotating shaft in which the cup is incorporated into the hub and a magnetized pin attached to the housing is inserted into the cup.

A servo burst timing window is identified. Then a plurality of digital samples are detected with the PRML data channel responsive to identifying the servo burst timing window. Sequential sets of the detected digital samples are accumulated by the PRML data channel and transmitted to the servo processor. The digital samples are processed by the servo processor for providing servo phase information that is used to provide servo position information.
