    • 11,392. Davis, G. H. May 19. Automatic instruments.-Relates to machines for perforating the tune-sheets of automatic musical instruments. Several blank sheets 5 are drawn from rollers mounted on the bars 6 , 6 , Fig. 1, and are pressed firmly together while being punched by punches mounted in the cross-bar 4, which is reciprocated vertically by an eccentric 2 on the mainshaft 2. Sheets of different width are kept in a central position by flanged bars 100, Fig. 9, adjusted by right and left handed nuts 102 engaging with screw threads on the spindles 103, which are turned simultaneonsly by bevel gearing connected with the spindle 104. The blank sheets are drawn forwards by chains 39, 40 running over sprocket-wheels actuated step by step by pawl- and-ratchet mechanism driven by a cam on the mainshaft. The chains 39, 40 carry bars 48, 49, and the sheets are gripped between the bars 48 and fixed or movable rollers 50 on the bars 49. The bars carry antifriction rollers running along the guide-rails 52. The stencil sheet 15, or other punch-selecting medium, is carried by the spindle 13 removably mounted on the frame 10 pivoted at 10 to the frame of the machine. The spindle 13 may be rotated directly by hand by the crank handle 75 and spur gearing. From the spindle 13, the stencil passes between the contact-fingers 17, 77 and the.rotatable contact-bar 16, which is kept clean by a roller 25. The stencil then passes around the loose roller 28, the rod 33, and the roller 38 until it is gripped between the bar 48 and roller 50. The stencil openings are arranged to come exactly over the punched openings in the sheets 5. Any want of coincidence in these openings is thus readily seen and remedied. As the stencil openings come opposite the fingers 17, an electric current passes between the fingers and the bar 16 and controls the electromagnets 20, which in turn control the punches in any suitable manner, such as that described in Specification No. 17,453, A.D. 1900. The frame 10 can be thrown to the right, to disconnect the bar 16, by pushing down the rod 69 so as to liberate the catches 66. This is done automatically, when the end of the stencil is reached, by means of an electromagnet 72 in connection with the finger 77. The stencil is fed past the fingers, when the punches are rising, by a rod 33 carried by links 34 pivoted at 35 and actuated by the eccentric 37, Fig. 1. As this rod moves to the left, the stencil is fed. The rod then moves back, and the slack is taken up by the forward movement of the bar 48 and roller 50, which takes place during part of the downward movement of the punches.
