    • Loosely poured granular material is compacted by a burst of air under pressure which is built up in a space Q1 and is abruptly released through the outlet end of a passageway Q3 which opens toward the material surface. While the pressure in Q1 is being built up and until released, it is restrained by a sealing member which concurrently covers the outlet side of Q1, the input end of passage Q3 and an accelerating space Q2. The sealing member is held in place by a counterpressure in a space Q4 acting on a larger surface area than Q1. The pressure is suddenly decreased in Q4, abruptly unbalancing the pressures and releasing the pressurized gas from Q1 into Q3 and against the surface.

    • In order to make castings from casting sand or another moldable mixture, a pressure surge wave is used which has upper and lower limit values which values have been established by an optimal selection of a pattern of pressures. The other moldable mixture comprises particles of raw material, binder, water, and, if need be, additives. The rise in pressure takes place with an increasing pressure gradient, dp/dt, of at least 50 atmospheres (absolute)/second. A minimum pressure of at least 2 atmospheres (absolute) is maintained for at least 0.01 second. The pressure drop takes place at a decreasing pressure gradient, -dp/dt, of up to about 2.0 atmospheres (absolute)/second. The disclosed values represent an optimalization, in view of a simple design and economy of operation, with a surprisingly good compacting.

    • The invention relates to a wheel for centrifugal jet machines with two rotating wheel discs, a plurality of centrifugal blades distributed evenly around the periphery, each blade being provided with lateral ribs or strips, the blades being insertable from the inside into radial grooves in the wheel discs and held therein by fixed stops. According to the invention, the length of the lateral strips is shorter than the diameter of the central free space of the wheel formed by the inside ends of the blades. Moreover, the width of the part of each centrifugal blade projecting beyond the lateral strips is smaller than the distance between the two discs. As a result of this dimensional relationship, the centrifugal blade can be inserted from the outside between the wheel discs in a position twisted in relation to the centrifugal axis until the lateral strips are in the central, free space and then are moved radially outwardly to a fixed stop from the inside in the grooves of the wheel discs, as a result of which centrifugal blades of any arbitrary length may be used.

The baffle plate is arranged to conduct the mixture blown off the workpiece by the blowoff device over the damming device and on to the cross conveyor.

    • An auxiliary device for use with a permanent mold in casting operations includes a cover plate having an upwardly and a downwardly facing surface. In place on the permanent mold, the downwardly facing surface defines the upper limit of the mold cavity. At least one pipe extends through an opening in the cover plate with its lower end in the plane of the downwardly facing surface of the cover plate. An annular recess located in one of the downwardly facing surface of the cover plate or the lower end of the pipe, encircles the lower end of the pipe radially outwardly from its opening. A breaking core can be incorporated as a part of the lower end of the pipe or it can be formed as a separate member. The pipe can be used only to feed additional molten metal into the mold as the poured metal starts to solidify or it can be used both to pour the molten metal into the mold cavity and then to provide the additional feed as the metal solidifies.
