    • An electric motor capable of easily obtaining a required output characteristic. Two separated windings are provided for each of phases U, V, W. By connecting amplifiers to the amplifier connection terminals AT1, AT2 separately, and selecting the connection states of the connector units A-I, an electric motor having an output characteristic equivalent to two electric motors can be obtained. Depending on a machine to which an electric motor is to be applied, an electric motor having an optimum output characteristic can be obtained only by selecting the connection states of the connector units.

    • An induction motor which is free from an induced voltage and has high power characteristics over a wide range. The winding of each phase comprises a plurality of partial windings having identical number of turns. When a low speed high torque rotation is necessary, the partial windings of each phase are connected in series in a Y-connection as shown in Fig. 2a, when an intermediate and low speed rotation is necessary, the partial windings of each phase are connected in series in a DELTA -connection as shown in Fig. 2b. In the case of an intermediate-high rotation, the partial windings are connected in parallel in a Y-connection as shown in Fig. 2c. In the case of a high rotation, the partial windings are connected in parallel in a DELTA -connection as shown in Fig. 2d. Since all the windings of the phases are used and the numbers of turns of the windings are reduced from the low speed rotation to the high speed rotation in order, an unused winding does not exist, an induced voltage is not generated, the drop of the power at the time of the changeover of the winding pattern can be covered, and high power characteristics can be obtained over a wide range.

    • An AC spindle motor (10) used for driving the spindle of a machine tool has a rotor (14) with an output shaft (12) that can be coupled to the spindle, and a stator (16) arranged to surround the rotor (14), the stator (16) having a laminated core (20) that forms a yoke and three-phase (U, V, W) stator windings accommodated in the winding grooves (22) of the laminated core (20) to form a revolving magnetic field. The windings (18u, 18v, 18w) of three-phase stator windings for forming the revolving magnetic field have: a first set of windings (C 2 , C 4 ) served with a drive current in either a low-speed region where the revolving speed is smaller than a predetermined value and a high-speed region where the revolving speed is larger than the predetermined value; a second set of windings (C 1 , C 3 served with a drive current in the low-speed region only; and electric contact means (S 1 to S 4 which so switch the circuit that the drive current is supplied to the first and second sets of windings (C 2 , C 4 , C 1 , C 3 ) simultaneously during the low-speed operation to form a first plural-pole revolving magnetic field and that the drive current is supplied to the first set of windings (C 2 , C 4 ) only during the high-speed operation to form a second plural-pole revolving magnetic field, the number of the second plural poles being smaller than the number of the first plural poles. The ampers turns of the windings and the number of poles are changed depending upon the low-speed operation and the high-speed operation.
