    • This invention relates to a magnetic head device and a disk drive, which are suitable for application to a mass-storage floppy disk drive. A first and second rails are provided on the disk side in projected form on a slider of each of magnetic head elements 20 so as to extend in a tangential direction R of a track of the disk and be parallel with each other. A head chip for recording and reproducing data in a state of being in contact with a recording surface of the disk and in a standard recording density is provided substantially in the central position of the first rail. Another head chip for recording and reproducing data in a state of being levitated from the recording surface of the disk and in a high recording density is provided in a position on the rear side of the second rail 26b with respect to the tangential direction R of the track. A width of the first rail of each magnetic head element is narrower than a width of the second rail thereof. The slider is inclined and levitated so that the second rail approaches the recording surface of the disk.

    • An enhanced-performance floppy diskette subsystem, which operates many times faster than a conventional floppy diskette subsystem, includes both an enhanced-performance floppy diskette drive and floppy diskette drive controller. The diskette drive rotates a floppy diskette two or more times faster than that of a conventional floppy diskette drive, and includes two separate and independent read/write ("R/W") channels. To provide enhanced-performance, the floppy diskette drive controller includes a DRAM cache that maintains an image of the data recorded on a floppy diskette present in the floppy diskette drive. Two separate and independent floppy disk drive controller channels respectively interface between the cache memory and the R/W channels included in the enhanced-performance floppy diskette drive. Operating in this way, both heads of the enhanced-performance floppy diskette drive concurrently record data from the cache onto a floppy diskette, or reproduce data from a floppy diskette for storage into the cache. To a computer program executed by a host microprocessor, the enhanced-performance floppy diskette mimics the operation of a conventional floppy diskette subsystem.

    • A bead positioning apparatus includes a carriage for moving a magnetic head to a specified position of data tracks in a storage medium, a motor for driving the carriage depending on excitation pulses from a step motor, a light shielding plate mounted on the carriage, a light-emitting element, a light-sensitive element opposing to the light-emitting element through the light shielding plate and a position-judging device for judging the position of the magnetic head depending on the excitation pulses of the step motor and a signal of the light-sensitive element generated when light is shielded by the light-shielding plate, wherein the light-emitting element and the light-sensitive element are connected to a power source through a common switching element and the position-judging device outputs a signal, when the switching element is turned off, which is the same signal as if the light-sensitive element were device sensing light. The switching element being turned off represents a stand-by mode which is a power saving feature.
