    • The present invention relates to projectiles that are particularly useful in guns having smooth bores, but it is equally useful in guns having either smooth or rifled bores. The present projectiles are cylindrical, tubular composites comprised of low density and high density materials. The present projectiles have a heavier forward portion and a lighter rearward portion. The distance from a point at the rear of the projectile to a plane perpendicular to the axis of the projectile and passing through the center of mass of the projectile is from about 1.0 to about 5.0, and more preferably from about 1.2 to about 1.8, and most preferably from about 1.2 to about 1.6, times the distance from a corresponding point at the front of the projectile to such plane. The present projectiles may also include a guidance system consisting of internal vanes, or fins, positioned within the projectile body. The present projectiles present substantially less head-on surface area when the projectile is in flight. Thus the initial velocity of the projectile decreases at a substantially slower rate than projectiles now in use. The design of the present projectiles enables the projectiles to have a flatter trajectory and carry more kinetic energy to the target.

    • An elongated tubular projectile is provided comprising a tubular side wall structure having inner and outer surfaces and an annular chamber formed between the inner and outer surfaces for receiving explosive material. The annular chamber can be provided with an internal peripheral surface adjacent to the outer surface of the tubular side wall and a grid of intersecting grooves formed in the internal peripheral surface to facilitate the production of a uniform distribution of fragments. Additionally, the projectile can be provided with a central portion and a nose portion having inner and outer walls adjoining the central portion. The inner wall of the nose portion can comprise a liner which, upon ignition of the explosive material, collapses upon itself and is propelled forward to define a self-forging armor piercing fragment.

    • THE DISCLOSURE RELATES TO CARTRIDGES FOR GUNS COMPOSED OF A STEEL CARTRIDGE SLEEVE HAVING A TEFLON OR NYLON, ETC., JACKET THEREAROUND TO PREVENT EXCESSIVE FRITION. IN ONE EMBODIMENT OF THE DISCLOSURE, THE SLEEVE IS CLOSED AT THE FRONT END BY A NYLON TOP CAP AND A MAIM CHARGE IS POSITIONED IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE TOP CAP AND WITHIN THE STEEL SLEEVE. AT THE REAR PORTION OF THE STEEL SLEEVE, THERE IS SPOSITIONED A NYLON END CAP WHICH IS SECURED WITHIN THE SLEDGE, THE END CAP INCLUDING A NEGATIVE ELECTRICAL CONTACT PASSING FROM THE OUTER PORTION THEREOF INTO THE MAIN BODY OF THE SLEEVE AND A POSITIVE ELECTRICAL CONTACT ALSO PASSING THERETHROUGH INTO THE INNER PORTION OF THE SLEEVE. WITHIN THE SLEEVE IS POSITIONED A GLASS OR PLASTIC CAPSULE WHICH ENCLOSES AN EXPLOSIVE COMPOSITION POSITIONED BETWEEN THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE CONTACTS. THE CARTRIDGE IS DESIGNED TO CAUSE AN EXPLOSION UPON THE PLACEMENT OF THE VOLTAGE ACROSS THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE CONTACTS TO PROJECT THE NYLON TOP CAP OUTWARDLY, THE SPENT SHELL BEING RETAINED IN THE GUN BARREL AND NOT UNDERGOING ANY MOVEMENT.

      A SECOND EMBODIMENT OF THE DISCLOSURE SETS FORTH A CARTRIDGE HAVING A TWO-PART SLEEVE AND A STEEL DISC THEREBETWEEN, ONLY THE FORWARD PORTION OF THE SLEEVE BEING PROJECTED UPON EXPLOSIVE WITHIN THE CARTRIDGE, THE OTHER PORTION BEING RETAINED WITHIN THE BARREL OF THE GUN. A THIRD EMBODIMENT OF THE DISCLOSURE SETS FORTH AN ARMOR PIERCING PROJECTILE UNIT WHEREIN A LEADING PROJECTILE IS FOLLOWED BY AN EXPLOSIVE TRAILING PROJECTILE, THE LEADING PROJECTILE PROVIDING AN OPENING FOR THE TRAILING PROJECTILE TO PASS THROUGH AND PROVIDE AN EXPLOSIVE DUE TO INERTIAL IMPACT. AN END CAP, WHICH IS PRROVIDED AS IN PRIOR EMBODIMENTS, FORMS THE WELL KNOWN "DUM-DUM" PROJECTILE AND DROPS FROM THE FLIGHT PATH OF THE OTHER TWO PROJECTILES.
