    • Automatic devices that determine when pollutant deposits have accumulated in ductwork may be employed to notify maintenance personnel or automated cleaning equipment of the need for ducts to cleaned or replaced. Various detection devices may be employed to detect a property of accumulated grease and generate an indication of an accumulation. The detection device may present a surface to the fume stream inside a duct. The surface may be cooled to a temperature that represents a worst case temperature so that the accumulation due to condensation on the detector surface is at least as high as the coolest surface in the ductwork which is being monitored. Alternatively, the detection device may be located external to the duct. The detection device may interrogate the surface of the duct through contact or noncontact measurements to determine the thickness of an accumulated grease layer on the interior of the duct.

    • Sensors, apparatus and methods are disclosed for detecting airflow direction between two volumes. The preferred airflow sensor includes a tube for conducting an airflow stream between the volumes, a first temperature sensor sensing ambient temperature in the first volume and a second temperature sensor sensing temperature of the airflow stream in the tube. A heat source heats air in the tube adjacent the end thereof communicating with the second volume and a comparator receives and compares output signals from the temperature sensors, providing an output indicative thereof. Various means are provided responsive to the output advancing appropriate response thereto. The disclosed sensors, apparatus and methods are particularly well adapted for indicating positive and negative pressure differentials at flues associated with combustion appliances.

    • A forced flue type combustion device in which an orifice 13 is provided in at least one of an air supply passage 5 and an exhaust passage 6, and in which the existence/nonexistence of a clog is determined on the basis of a detected pressure difference value from a pressure difference sensor 14 for detecting the difference between the pressures on the upstream and downstream sides of the orifice 13, is arranged so that the existence/nonexistence of a clog can be determined with accuracy even during weak combustion with a low rotational speed of the combustion fan 8. Speed increasing processing for increasing the rotational speed of the combustion fan 8 is intermittently executed during weak combustion. During weak combustion, clogging determination processing based on the detected pressure difference value is executed only when the rotational speed of the combustion fan 8 is increased by speed increasing processing. Clogging determination processing is started after the rotational speed of the combustion fan 8 has become stable at the speed to which it is increased by speed increasing processing.
