摘要： The invention relates to a motor vehicle (1) comprising an occupant restraint device (14) whose control device (12) generates a triggering signal when a predefined hazard signal is generated in accordance with signals of a safety sensor system (2), said triggering signal causing the occupant restraint device (14) to act upon a vehicle occupant (6) by means of at least one impact cushion (13). The control device (12) generates the hazard signal at least in accordance with vehicle acceleration signals (a_x, a_y, a_r) and a belt state signal representing activation or deactivation of a safety belt (15). The control device (12) deactivates the occupant restraint device (14) and/or activates the same at reduced power at least for a certain period of time when the safety belt (15) has been recognized to be deactivated and vehicle acceleration signals (a_x, a_y, a_r) are provided to which a critical forward movement of the occupant is assigned in case the safety belt (15) is deactivated.

摘要： An improved infrared occupant detection system (10) that provides accurate and reliable occupant intrusion information at a speed sufficient to timely inhibit or otherwise control deployment of occupant restraints (18). An array of infrared emitters (50) is selectively activated to emit a predetermined pattern of IR beams in an area between the passenger seat (16) and the point of deployment of the restraint (18), and the reflected IR energy is detected by a photo-sensitive receiver (44) and analyzed to determine whether an occupant is out of position for deployment of the restraint (18). In the preferred embodiment, the intensity of the received beam energy and the position of the respective beam are used to construct a table of individual intrusion factors (136, 138), and a composite intrusion factor based on the individual intrusion factors is categorized by magnitude to form an indication of occupant intrusion level (150, 156), which in turn, is used to determine whether, or how forcefully, to deploy the restraint in the event of a serious crash.

摘要： This invention describes a roof-mounted sensor consisting of two rows of intersecting electrodes that are placed across an area of the vehicle's roof and a method to determine the position and motion of an occupant. This is accomplished by measuring physical values, which depend on the distance between the highest point of an occupant's body to each electrode in the row. Analysis of said physical values is used to derive an occupant's position relative to each row and the distance between the highest point of an occupant's body and the vehicle's roof. By analyzing the change in distances with respect to time, the occupant's motion can be tracked.

摘要： An invention is disclosed to divide a segmented image (42) of an occupant (18) into an upper torso image (54) and a lower torso image. An occupant labeling heuristic can identify each pixel within the segmented image (42) as an upper torso pixel or a lower torso pixel. A k-means module (60) can provide an initial pixel classification by comparing the distance between the particular pixel and an estimated midpoint on the upper torso with the distance between the particular pixel and an estimated midpoint on the lower torso. The iterative parameters estimator (66) can update the mean values for the upper torso (64) and lower torso (62) by performing a conditional likelihood heuristic. Pixels can then be classified as either upper or lower torso pixels by comparing a Mahalonobis distance for each torso. Airbag-related applications can then use the upper torso image to generate occupant characteristics relevant to airbag-related applications.

In particular, the present invention is an image segmentation system (16) and method used to isolate the segmented image (31) of a target person, animal, or object from an ambient image (38) which includes the target person, animal, or object, in addition to the area (21) surrounding the target. The invention supports the ability of an airbag deployment system to distinguish between different types of occupants (18) by providing such deployment systems with a segmented image of the occupant. The invention is particularly useful at night or in other environments involving inadequate light or undesirable shadows. The invention can use histograms (39) and cumulative distribution functions (52) to perform image thresholding. Morphological erosion and dilation can be used to eliminate optical "noise" from the image. Gap filling is performed on the basis of the "momentum" and "gravity" of regions of similar pixel values. An upper ellipse (80) can generated to represent the upper torso of the occupant (18). The invention is highly flexible, and can be modified in accordance with the desired use.
