    • A settling tank for drilling fluids is provided, having a first compartment. The first compartment has confining walls, an inlet, an outlet weir, and a source of secondary fluid. At least one of the confining walls has a downwardly sloped confining wall. The inlet is provided for supply of drilling fluids into the first compartment. The outlet weir is positioned in at least one of the confining walls. At least one source of secondary fluid is provided. The source of secondary fluid is configured to direct fluids down the downwardly sloped confining wall towards a collection area. By directing fluids down the downwardly sloped confining wall, solids that may accumulate in the compartment are more efficiently moved towards the collection area where they can be removed. The apparatus and method disclosed herein describe an efficient approach to processing drilling fluids on site.

    • Method and apparatus are described for removing material from a sump. The sump has substantially parallel and elongated sidewalls and has a longitudinal axis. The sump is enclosed with ends and a bottom and is adapted for filling with a water-solid mixture to form a slurry. A suction pump is mounted above the sump and extends into the sump for removal of water and solid material. Apparatus is attached to the suction pump for moving the suction pump along the longitudinal axis of the sump. The actual rate at which the suction pump is trammed is determined by apparatus which measures the concentration of the slurry near the pump and transmits a signal to a control unit which operates the tramming control circuit to maintain the concentration at a predetermined ratio of material to water.

    • An apparatus for extracting sludge from a rectangular sewage flotation tank comprises a bridge structure having rotatably mounted thereon a horizontal drum driven for rotation and provided with suitably shaped vanes, the direction of rotation of the drum and vane assembly being such that at the point of contact thereof with the scraped surface the direction of its velocity vector is opposed to the direction of travel of the bridge structure. The bridge structure also includes a suitably shaped scraper blade pushing the sludge continuously towards the front of the movable vanes of the drum, whereby the extracted sludge is fed to a discharge device mounted inside the tubular shaft of the drum and provided with means for directing the sludge into a container secured to the bridge.

    • A rectangular tank for purifying domestic sewage and industrial sewage is disclosed. The tank comprises a flocculating section extending the length of the tank for introducing sewage therein, a sedimentation section in fluid communication with the flocculating section including an outlet weir at the upper portion of the sedimentation section. A plurality of compartments are formed in both the flocculating and sedimentation sections to substantially uniformly distribute the incoming sewage the length of the tank. Outlet means at the bottom of each of the flocculating sections opens into the sedimentation section to guide the sewage from the flocculating section in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the tank and upwardly towards the outlet weir for discharge as clarified water. Means for agitating the incoming sewage is provided in each of the flocculating compartments. The deposited sludge is collected and transported by a suction device.

    • A system for controlling pollutants from the quenching station of a coke oven is provided. The system includes a coke breeze sump that is divided into two zones, a coke breeze settling zone and a clean liquid zone. A first pumping means withdraws a thickened sludge of coke breeze, either continuously or intermittently, from the coke breeze settling zone and a second pumping means flows clean liquid from the clean liquid zone to a spray means. The spray means directs the clean liquid onto hot incandescent coke in a quenching car thereby producing quenched coke and a slurry of coke breeze and of liquid. This slurry drains into the coke breeze settling zone of the sump where the coke breeze settles by gravitational force to form a thickened sludge of coke breeze in the coke breeze settling zone so that clean supernatant liquid collects above the thickened sludge of coke breeze in the clean liquid zone of the sump.
