    • A biomechanical custom made foot orthosis (10) and a method for making the same. The orthosis (10) has a thermoformed flexible top layer (12) made of a first moldable synthetic rubber material, and a thermoformed flexible reinforcement core layer (14) made of a. moldable core material that is molded onto the top layer, (12). The core layer (14) has a posterior end (16) aligned with a mid anterior plantar prominence (K) of a calcaneus bone (C), and an anterior end (18) aligned near metatarsal-phalangeal joints (J) of the foot. The orthosis (10) also has a thermoformed flexible bottom layer (20) made of a second moldable synthetic rubber material that is molded onto the top layer (12) and the core layer (14). The core layer (14) is more rigid than the top and bottom layers (12, 20). The orthosis (10) corrects anatomic biomechanical deficiencies of the foot and ensuing body deficiencies.

    • A system and method for fitting footwear and footwear inserts provides a removable insert which measures the foot by thermal imaging. The insert is provided with a thermally sensitive layer, for example a thermochromic material having a color transition interval within the range between room temperature and body temperature, that thus reacts to the heat transferred from portions of the foot in contact with the insert and temporarily changes color. The insert retains an image of the footprint for a short interval after contact with the foot, and can be removed from the footwear to examine the position and size of the foot relative to the footwear insole (and thus relative to the footwear) when the footwear is actually worn. For inserts which are purchased separately for cushioning, odor-reduction etc., the footprint image can be used as a guide to cut the footwear insert to follow the shape of an individual's foot.

    • A method for manufacturing custom fit therapeutic footwear such as shoes and inserts includes the step of measuring a patient's foot and forming an imprint of a patient's foot to identify the patient's footprint and any high pressure areas on the bottom of the foot. The method also includes the step of making a mold of a lower portion of the patient's foot and subsequently making a plaster cast of the lower portion of the patient's foot. A multidensity sheet of insert material is provided and formed into a shape that corresponds to the lower portion of a patient's foot as for example by vacuum forming. The method also includes the step of providing a second insert material that is softer than the first insert material. The imprint of the patient's foot is then used to position any needed accommodations. The area to be accommodated is then punched out through the entire thickness of the insert and filled with a sheet of softer insert material. The final product may then be covered with a top coat or sheet of moldable polyethylene.

    • A device and method is provided whereby application is made to at least part of the sole of a suitably positioned foot. The device (1) (FIGS. 1 and 2) comprises a member or plate (20) having a planar surface (21) for pressure application to the sole by a handle (28) and in one arrangement is hingedly mounted (22, 24, 26) about horizontal axes from a leg rest (10) which lies in use on a seat or couch for the patient. This enables the surface (21) to be brought against the sole and also tilted for required contact with the latter. The plate (20) is also shown mounted for angular movement about a vertical axis X for additional tilting of the surface (21). An electronic unit (30) on the plate (20) has an LCD display (32) for showing angles of tilt. With the surface (21) in appropriate contact the sole can be manually palpated or manipulated e.g. for contact of the surface (21) with metatarsal joints or points, and/or the subtalar joint palpated for the neutral condition etc. The required position of the surface (21) is maintained while moulding material such as plaster of Paris (e.g. as a bandage) is applied to the sole and foot and allowed to set in providing a mould for use in the manufacture of orthoses. Alternatively, the plate may be simply hand held for similar operation. The planar surface may have buttons each for initial contact with a metatarsal point for indicator lamp operation when the metatarsal point lifts away. The handle may operate strain gauge means of the electronic unit to indicate application pressure at the LCD display.

    • A method of measuring the height of a foot arch precisely and easily using two essential heights of the foot arch is disclosed. In the method, a foot cast is primarily cast by pouring plaster into a foot mold. Thereafter, a first intersecting point and a second intersecting point are determined. The first intersecting point is determined by making a first line and a third line intersect. The second intersecting point is determined by making a second line and the third line intersect. The first line is a straight line extending from the center of the second toe to the center of the heel end. The second line is a straight line extending from the center of the big toe to a point spaced apart inwardly from the center of the heel end by ⅛ of the total distance of the heel end. The third line is a center line of the transverse arch of the foot. Finally, a first height and a second height are measured while the foot pattern is set in an upright position. The first height is defined between a flat base level and the first intersecting point, while the second height is defined between the base level and the second intersecting point.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for relatively convenient and efficient production of custom molded inserts for shoes. The apparatus utilizes a molding pillow arrangement, upon which a user stands during use. The molding pillow arrangement has a composite construction including a first resilient layer, a middle resilient layer and a bottom support layer. The bottom support layer preferably includes a generic arch curve therein. The upper resilient layer is formed from a relatively soft foam, and thus molds around a user's feet. The middle layer is resilient, but relatively hard by comparison to the upper layer. The middle layer provides for a relatively firm cushion underneath the user's foot, facilitating contouring of a molded insert to the bottom of the user's foot. Preferably, at least the upper cushion portion of the molding pillow arrangement comprises left and right cushions, independently moldable with respect to a user's left and right feet. A preferred insert construction for use in association with the method and apparatus is provided.
