    • A prosthetic heart valve includes a valve core and a mounting retainer that extends radially out from the core to an outer perimeter portion. The outer perimeter portion has a different shape than a perimeter of the valve core when both perimeters are viewed along an axis that will be the axis of blood flow through the valve core when the prosthetic heart valve is in use in a patient. The outer perimeter portion is used to mount the valve to another structure such as a native valve annulus in a valve replacement procedure. The mounting retainer bridges the gap(s) between the valve core and the outer perimeter portion, and may also provide attachment sites for other native tissue structures (like chordae tendonae), which attachment sites can be at or at least closer to original (native) attachment sites for those tissue structures.

    • A prosthesis (10) for a heart valve (e.g., the mitral valve) is generally C-shaped in plan view. Points at the top (12) and bottom (14) of the C lie in a plan view plane. The back (30) of the C rises above the plan view plane between the top and bottom points. Free end portions (42, 44) of the C may also rise above the plan view plane. The prosthesis is accordingly saddle-shaped. The back of the C may have an indentation that extends toward the open side of the C. In use as a mitral valve prosthesis the top and bottom of the C are respectively adjacent the commissures of the valve, and the back of the C is adjacent the posterior section of the valve. The prosthesis may be rigid or semi-rigid.

    • A manipulable low profile heart valve holder (12) that can be pivotally attached to a handle (22) that permits the heart valve holder (12) and a retained heart valve prosthesis (13) to be manipulated remotely during implantation. The heart valve holder (12) is pivotable from a position wherein the plane of the orifice of a retained heart valve (13) is parallel to the axis of the handle (22), to a second position wherein the plane of the retained heart valve (13) is substantially 90 DEG to the axis of the handle (22). This pivoting arrangement particularly aids in manipulation of the heart valve prosthesis (13) during implantation using trocars for access to the body cavity. Manipulation is accomplished by having controllable elements on the handle (22) and retained on the exterior of the patient. Manipulation of the heart valve holder (12) also may be done through separate instruments operating through separate trocars.
