PROCESS: The compound of formula I can be prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation of the quinone compound of formula II in the presence of a reduction catalyst (e.g. Pd/C). The reaction is preferably carried out in a solvent (e.g. acetonitrile) at 0W60°C. A compound of formula I wherein R is tert-alkyl can be converted to another compound wherein R is H by reacting with aluminum chloride. The compound of formula II used as a starting material can be obtained by reacting a phenol, etc. with (perfluoroalkyl)aryl iodonium salt, and treating the reaction product with a base in the presence of acetocyanhydrin.

EFFECT:The thio group and sulfinyl group bonded to perfluoroalkyl group can be selectively and exclusively oxidized.

摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain a cation exchange membrane useful, especially in electrolysis of salt, by treating a membrane of a perfluorocarbon polymer having terminal groups, (DF2)n-I, with an organic peracid and hydrolyzing the polymer thereby introducing carboxy groups into the membrane at low temperatures. CONSTITUTION:An ion exchange membrane having groups COOM, wherein M is H or a metal atom, is obtained by treating a membrane of a prefluorocarbon polymer having terminal groups, (CF2)n-I, wherein n is 1-6, with an organic peracid, e.g., trifluoroperacetic acid, at -30-80 deg.C, pref., in a solvent and then hydrolyzing the polymer with an alakil or an acid. The polymer membrane having (CF2)n-I can be prepared, for example, by hydrolyzing a perfluorocarbon polymer membrane of the formula, wherein X is CF3 or CF2OCF3, n is 0-5, m is 0 or 1 and k/1=3-16, converting the groups into sulfonyl chloride groups with the aid of phosphorus oxychloride/phosphorus pentachloride and treating the membrane with an aqueous iodine solution.
