    • An access assembly to provide access for surgical instruments during endoscopic surgical procedures and simultaneously seal the access opening when the instrument is withdrawn is disclosed. The assembly has a base, and an elastomeric sealing element and a tubular conduit. The base has a flange and a neck. The elastomeric sealing element has an inner elongated central channel which provides a passageway for surgical instruments into a body cavity. The sealing element also has an outer inflatable sleeve. When the space between the inner channel and outer sleeve is inflated, a distal balloon portion of the sleeve is inflated and the inner channel is compressed to constrict the inner channel passageway and therefore provide a seal. The primary advantages of this access assembly are that it provides a precise passage into the channel so that the elastomeric sealing element is not inadvertently punctured, and it can be manufactured in a cost effective manner because the base of the access assembly provides a ready platform for manufacture and attachment of the sealing element.

    • Method and apparatus for purging air from a tubing network finds particular utility as a component part of a blood constituent processing system. Collection and return needles of a disposable tubing network are initially contained within a common antiseptic enclosure. A purge fluid (e.g., saline solution) may then be introduced into the interior chamber of the enclosure via one of the needles and withdrawn from the interior chamber via the other of the needles. Air entrained in the tubing network may thus be trapped within the common enclosure itself and/or vented therefrom via a one-way valve and hydrophobic microbe filter and/or the entrained air pockets may be encouraged to flow to a separate suitable air trap location of the tubing network whereby the network is purged of air.

    • A suction cup adapted to engage a surface of a beating heart with sufficient force to move the beating heart to an unnatural position upon moving the suction cup, while the suction cup maintains engagement with the surface of the heart and the heart continues to heat. Various suction cups are described each including at least a first chamber having a flexible rim and configured to engage the surface of the beating heart and a second chamber smaller than the first chamber and fluidly connected therewith. A suspension device configured to engage a beating heart and maintain engagement via suction while moving the suspension device to move the beating heart to an unnatural position and maintain the beating heart in the unnatural position to perform a surgical procedure, while the heart continues to beat, includes a suction cup and a support arm connected thereto. The suction cup has a first chamber configured to engage the surface of the beating heart, and a second chamber smaller than the first chamber and fluidly connected therewith. The second chamber is adapted to fluidly connect the first chamber with a source of suction. The support arm is movable with the suction cup to effect movement of the beating heart after engagement of the suction cup to a surface of the heating heart.
