    • System and method for partitioning a video into a series of semantic units where each semantic unit relates to a generally complete thematic topic. A computer implemented method for partitioning a video into a series of semantic units wherein each semantic unit relates to a theme or a topic, comprises dividing a video into a plurality of homogeneous segments, analyzing audio and visual content of the video, extracting a plurality of keywords from the speech content of each of the plurality of homogeneous segments of the video, and detecting and merging a plurality of groups of semantically related and temporally adjacent homogeneous segments into a series of semantic units in accordance with the results of both the audio and visual analysis and the keyword extraction. The present invention can be applied to generate important table-of-contents as well as index tables for videos to facilitate efficient video topic searching and browsing.

    • Methods for providing instant messaging capability in conjunction with an online reference is provided. In one embodiment, the method may include receiving an indication to initiate display of online content, selecting at least one reference in response to the indication, the at least one reference being associated with a source, and displaying the at least one reference in association with an instant messaging enablement indicator. If desired, the instant messaging enablement indicator may be different depending upon whether the source associated with the at least one reference is not instant messaging enabled, is instant messaging enabled but not currently online, and is instant messaging enabled and currently online. Accordingly, the method may further include determining if the source associated with the at least one selected reference is instant messaging enabled and, if so, determining if the source is currently capable of at least one of receiving and transmitting instant messages.

    • Provided is a generalized Recursive STTC (Space-Time Trellis Code) encoder which can improve diversity gain and coding gain in terms of transmission without increasing circuit complexity in a transmission system by forming an internal encoder of a multi-antenna mobile telecommunication system using a Recursive Systematic Convolutional code (RSC) block having two output ends to form a systematic ineral encoder. In addition, the generalized RSTTC encoder has a ratio of input data to output data (n−1):n by using a plurality of parallel RSC blocks each having two output ends. Thus, flexibility can be given to the size of data input to each RSC block and a transmission data rate can be improved in the internal encoder of a transmission system.

    • A system and related techniques automatically analyze Web search and other activity, to generate locality-selected results based on not just the user's location, but also the business or other content provider's location and the degree of local intent in the user's query. The locality or region to the user may be identified, for instance, by the presence of geographic clues or indicators in the general content of the Web site, for instance, the presence of ZIP codes, telephone numbers, town names or other semantic or other indicators which have some geographic connotation in search terms, key words or other query or semantic inputs. The user's degree of local intent may be automatically analyzed as well, for instance by the presence of terms such as “car repair” or “pizza restaurant” which may suggest the user intends to locate local goods, services or providers. The search service may then access a content database to identify ads or other media or content which match or correspond to the detected locality or region, such as ads for local restaurants, car dealerships, physicians or other services or products, and which correspond in location, working radius and degree of localness to the user's query. Because the delivery of localized search results according to the invention is specifically filtered for user-driven local intent, advertisements and other media or content may be delivered which better match the user's search objectives.
