    • There is provided a method in a cellular telecommunications network, the cellular telecommunications network comprising at least a first cell and a second cell. The method comprises the steps of transmitting (302) first periodic physical signals, usable by a device to determine its location, to the first cell; and transmitting (304) second periodic physical signals, usable by a device to determine its location, to the second cell. The second periodic physical signals are synchronized with the first periodic physical signals and have a timing offset, such that the first periodic physical signals and the second periodic physical signals are not transmitted simultaneously. The method is characterized in that transmission of data or control signals to the first cell is inhibited when the second periodic physical signals are transmitted to the second cell.

    • Methods and apparatus for determining an assistance data transmission time to account for cell timing acquisition are disclosed. In an example method, a network node determines whether a target wireless communication node (110) will need to obtain timing information for at least one cell to be included in the assistance data. The network node then estimates an acquisition time ΔT for the wireless communication node (110) to obtain timing information for at least a first cell. The network node then transmits the positioning assistance data to the wireless communication node (110) at least ΔT before an expected time for the wireless communication node (110) to begin performing positioning measurements. In some embodiments, the network node is configured to wait for a time period at least equal to an expected reporting delay that accounts for the acquisition time ΔT, before deciding that the positioning has failed.

The node (44) correspondingly generates the assistance data to be transmitted to indicate positioning occasion timing for at least one cell relative to the latter of those two consecutive positioning occasions of the reference cell. Such calculation and transmission enables the user equipment (36) to be certain that the next reference cell positioning occasion occurring after its reception of the assistance data is the reference cell positioning occasion on which the assistance data is based.

    • Positioning and location services are provided in a wireless communication network using civic address information. The civic address information may comprise a data structure including textual Information Elements such as apartment or office number, street number, street name, city, state, postal code, and the like. A positioning method is defined comprising performing a civic address lookup to obtain a location in civic address format for an identified node, based upon information about the identified node's serving (or associated) node and neighbor nodes. Signaling is defined to request the civic address positioning method, to exchange capabilities, to communicate location information using a civic address format, report a positioning failure and optionally the failure cause, and the like. Location information may be translated between a civic address format and a 3GPP or 3GPP2 positioning format. The positioning method and associated signaling are particularly advantageous in indoor environments, where conventional positioning methods fare poorly or fail altogether.

The user equipment (36) receives assistance data that indicates positioning occasion periodicities of a first cell and a reference cell, and that indicates a positioning occasion timing offset between those cells. The user equipment (36) performs signal detection at candidate timing offsets surrounding the indicated positioning occasion timing offset, to determine which candidate timing offset has the greatest probability of being the actual positioning occasion timing offset between the first cell and the reference cell. The user equipment (36) may then time assisted positioning measurements for the first cell based on the candidate timing offset determined as most likely being the actual timing offset, rather than necessarily timing those measurements based on the offset indicated in the assistance data.
