    • A mobile station comprises a radio communication unit (22) for communicating with a radio communication network for finding carriers on which transmissions are being made in active transmission intervals of a transmission cycle following a discontinuous transmission scheme. The radio communication unit is configured to select a carrier based on probability settings provided for each carrier of the scheme, scan the selected carrier during a time range that is a fraction of the transmission cycle, confirm the presence of the carrier if transmissions are detected and otherwise to adjust the probability settings of the carriers based on the timing of the scanning and the position of the carrier active transmission interval in the transmission sequence and repeat the selection of carrier based on probability settings and adjusting of probability settings until the presence of a carrier has been confirmed.

    • A base station reduces interference from user equipment operating in a neighboring cell by monitoring one or more channels of neighboring base stations to receive a signal transmitted by a user equipment that is being served by one of the neighboring base stations, and detecting when a power level of the signal transmitted by the user equipment exceeds a threshold power level. The base station then uses the received signal transmitted by the user equipment to acquire an identifier of the user equipment. The base station then communicates with a network node of the mobile communication system to arrange for it to serve the user equipment itself but in only the uplink direction. The neighboring base station continues to serve the user equipment in the downlink direction in what is now an asymmetrical uplink/downlink connection.

    • In one aspect, the present invention provides methods (400, 900) and apparatuses (22, 26, 40) for detecting that a wireless communication device (40) in a serving cell (24, 27) is experiencing excessive interference variance (68), detecting a transmission pattern (74) of interfering transmissions (46) giving rise to such variance, and correspondingly adjusting scheduling of the device (40) as a function of the detected transmission pattern (74), to at least partly avoid the interfering transmissions (46). An advantageous feature of such operation is that the determination of excessive interference variance (68) and the determination of the transmission pattern (74) associated with that varying interference can be done by a network node (22, 26), e.g., the device's serving base station (22, 26), or by the device (40), without requiring backhaul signaling or other inter-node cooperation in the network (20).

The method comprises the steps of: receiving in the mobile terminal information from the base station indicating available component carriers; detecting in the mobile terminal at least one dynamic parameter indicative of the mobile terminal's current ability to handle component carriers having non-contiguous bandwidths; determining in the mobile terminal in dependence of the at least one dynamic parameter which of the available component carriers to utilize; and transmitting from the mobile terminal to the base station information indicating the component carriers determined to utilize. By doing this the mobile terminal may choose to limit the number of component carriers used in situations where it is disadvantageous, such as situations where the power consumption of supporting multiple component carriers is high or situations where complex hardware is needed.
