    • An electronic device may generate content that is to be displayed on a display. The display may have an array of liquid crystal display pixels for displaying image frames of the content. The display may be operated in at least a normal viewing mode, a privacy mode, an outdoor viewing mode, and a power saving mode. The different view modes may exhibit different viewing angles. In one configuration, the display may include a backlight unit (42) that generates a collimated light source and that includes a switchable diffuser film (200) for selectively scattering the collimated light source depending on the current viewing mode of the display. In another configuration, the display may include a backlight unit that generates a scattered light source that includes a switchable microarray structure such as a switchable mirror structure or a tunable microlens array for selectively collimating the scattered light source depending on the current viewing mode.

The display may include a color filter substrate (56), a liquid crystal layer (56), and a thin-film transistor substrate (58). The color filter substrate may form the outermost layer of the display. The color filter substrate (56) has a substrate (104) having opposing inner and outer surfaces (118, 116). A layer of patterned metal on the inner surface may form metal alignment marks (120). The metal alignment marks may include alignment marks (120R, 120G, 120B) for color filter elements (106R, 106G, 106B), alignment marks (120BM) for a black matrix layer (108) that is formed on top of the color filter elements, and post spacer alignment marks (120PS). The layer of patterned metal may also form structures such as logo structures (100) that are visible on the outer surface (106) in an inactive border region (IA) of the display (14).

    • Display layers in an electronic device may be used to generate images. The display layers may include liquid crystal display layers such as upper and lower polarizers and a layer of liquid crystal material. A display cover layer may be mounted in a housing using adhesive. A touch sensor layer may be mounted under the display cover layer. An air gap may separate the upper polarizer from the touch sensor layer and display cover layer. Antireflection coatings may be formed on the lower surface of the display cover layer or touch sensor layer and may be formed on the upper surface of the upper polarizer. The antireflection coatings may include coatings formed from a polymer hard coat covered with a polymer layer having a different index of refraction and may include broadband antireflection coating material formed from textured polymer or other structure exhibiting a continuously varying index of refraction.

    • A liquid crystal display (14) is provided with transparent substrates (70, 72) that minimize light leakage in the black state. The transparent substrates (70, 72) include a thin-film transistor substrate (72) having thin-film transistors formed on it and a colour filter substrate (72) having a layer (71) of colour filter elements. The thin- film transistor substrate (72) is formed from a material having a photo-elastic constant smaller than 3.0x10 -13 cm 2 /dyn. The colour filter substrate is also preferably formed from a material having a photo-elastic constant smaller than 3.0x10 -13 cm 2 /dyn. This choice of the photo-elastic constant reduces birefringence effects arising in the thin-film transistor substrate (70) and in the colour filter substrate (72) when the display (14) experiences internal or external stresses, thus helping minimise light leakage from the display.
