    • 828,492. Parachute pack and rip-cord devices. SWITLIK PARACHUTE CO. Inc. Oct. 15, 1957 [Nov. 19, 1956], No. 32162/57. Class 4. A parachute pack combination comprises closure flaps and a rip-cord having a plurality of grommet securing pins mounted thereon, wherein the rip-cord and pins are relatively movable for a predetermined length of the rip-cord without the pins disengaging the grommets. The rip-cord 10 is operable by a handle 13 attached to the parachute harness (not shown). A collar 14 on the rip-cord engages the handle, and if the rip-cord is fairly stiff, tends to prevent accidental pack release. Each pin 7 comprises a sleeve 9 slidable on the ripcord, and engages a conventional cone and grommet pack fastening (not shown). Abutments 11 on the rip-cord contact the pins and effect release of the para. chute after the rip-cord has been moved through a certain distance. In a non rigid back pack, the lost motion betweer the abutments 11 and the pins may be varied so that the pins release the fast enings sequentially, or may be the same for all pins. Some pins may be securec to the rip cord.

    • 666,040. Parachutes. STEVENS, A, H. (Switlik Parachute Co., Inc.). Aug. 29, 1949, No. 22374/49. Class 4 In order to prevent deterioration of the fabric of a parachute canopy it is packed in a hermetically seated container from which the air has preferably been evacuated. As shown the parachute 46 is packed in a hermetically sealed evacuated container 40 mounted beneath a chair seat 21. which is attached to a harness 29 and may be released from the remainder of the chair. A valve 50 in the base of the container enables the latter to be connected to a vacuum pump or permits the introduction into the container of a gas such as nitrogen. When the parachute is to be used a handle 57 at the side of the chair is operated to withdraw a plug 55 from the base of the container 40 to destroy the vacuum, and also to pull on a wire 37 to break plastic seals 36a between the seat 21 and container 40, the latter of which is thus released. The parachute is then deployed by manual or automatic operation of a static line 47. A pressure gauge, and moisture-indicating substance such as silica gel, may be mounted behind a window 53 in the parachute container.
