    • 323,369. British Jeffrey-Diamond, Ltd., (Jeffrey Manufacturing Co.). Jan. 2, 1929. Coal-cutting machines. - A coalcutting machine comprises a key cutter 12 of the endless chain type driven by a motor 10 and carried by a rotatable plate 9 carrying a drum 37 rotatable in either direction; one or two ropes 39 are wound on the drum, the free ends being secured at 42 to the framework of the machine, whereby the plate 9 and the key cutter may be swung in either direction. The drum is driven by an eccentric 22, Figs. 3 and 5, on the shaft 17 which drives the cutter chain, the eccentric acting through links 24, 24a, connected by horizontal and vertical pivots 25, 27, , and through one of two opposed pawls 45 cooperating with opposed ratchets 43, 44, to drive worm gearing 31, 32. The pawls are controlled by a mask plate 49 adjusted through a pinion 51, Fig. 7, by a handle 53 provided with a locking pin 54. The worm shaft is provided with a brake drum 56, Figs. 7 and 10, co-operating with a brake band 57 adjusted by a screw 59 to hold the drum against rotation. The shaft 17 is connected to the cutter-chain drive-sprocket wheel 15 by an internally-toothed clutch sleeve 21. A motor 4 on the main frame of the machine drives the supporting wheels and a cable reel 6.

    • 308,134. Tugwood, R. J., (Jeffrey Manufacturing Co.). July 23, 1928. Drilling - machines. - A truck 1, carrying a coalcutting machine and capable of being driven from a motor 4, is provided with lateral plates 65 supporting a channel bar 64 on which one or more brackets 66 are pivoted on vertical axes ; a hollow bar 67 is slidable in each bracket, antifriction rollers being provided therefor and a locking screw holding the bar in adjusted position, while a rod 70 is fixed to the bar and engaged with one of a series of apertures 71 at the front of the truck to act as a brace. A pivoted yoke 74 at the end of each bar 67 provides a universal support for a drilling-machine comprising an electric motor 76 controlled by a switch 78 on the bracket 66; a threaded shaft 79, carrying a drill 81 extends through the motor and is rotated thereby, while a divided feed-nut 82, Fig. 12, co-operates with the shaft 79 to advance the drill. The feed-nut has a cylindrical extension 84 rotatably supported on an extension 85 of the casing of the motor 76, and a brake hand 86, controlled by a screw 87, encircles the extension 84 to control rotation of the feed-nut. The drills may be set parallel to the line of advance of the truck, the feed-nuts tightened to clamp the shafts 79 and the brake-bands 86 released, the drills then being fed in to the coal by the advance of the truck to drill the coal simultaneously with the kerf-cutting operation.
